TD6 Manifold clean.

Whenever I buy myself a new to me vehicle one of the first thimgs i do is a full service.
On my 2003 TD6 this has been a bit drawn out due to work commitments but I am getting there.
So far I have replaced
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Crank Breather Filter
Transmission Filter and Oil
Transfer Box Oil
and today
EGR valve with a blanking plate.
While doing the EGR I thought to hell with it lets check the inlet manifold. Glad I did that as the soot build up was pretty impressive especially as LR had removed the manifold in the last few years under the PO stewardship. But as they only replace parts it is not too surprising.
The question was how do I get rid of the carbon. For the manifold I ran it through a parts wash and scrubbed as far as could then dropped it into a fish bin full of hot soapy water. This cleaned out the majority of the soot with some largish lumps washing out. Next I sloshed petrol through it till it ran clean. Let that evaporate and put it all together.
If this has cured the black smoke issue I will wait to see. I am awaiting my IID tool to see what faults that brings up with the electronics before I go much further.

Good work Adrian... Did the same to my 04 a while back but then, had the inlet reworked/polished before it went back together... (as it didn't cost a great amount because it was already stripped)

Im told its what they do with performance engines and although a TD6 is not originally performance orientated... Every little helps...

Before im bombarded with a million questions about performance and consumption... It was chipped and a brand new turbo fitted at the same time! So, yes it was much quicker and better on fuel but i don't know which upgrade did what im afraid...

Craig Thumbs Up

Thanks Craig, I am trying to get rid of black smoke whenever I WOT the throttle so this is one thing to eliminate.

My TD6 has 228000km on the clock and I was wondering if anyone has removed the particulate filter and what difference it made. Going on the soot in the inlet I can only imagine this would be worse.

One thing I forgot to mention is this is the messiest job I have ever done on a vehicle. And I have worked on a few in my time.
The liquid soot mess that comes out of the manifold gets everywhere, I have spent the evening cleaning up every time I go out outside as I pick it up on my feet from everywhere.

Hi Adrian,
While cleaning the manifold is certainly not something I'd discourage, I do think that excessive soot at WOT (and oil residue in the intake) will likely have other causes.

One thing I'd def do is replace the oil separator: there is a new vortex type of separator available from BMW. If you buy the original type from LR, just remember to replace it at oil services. There was a thread on this very recently with PNs.

As far as soot at WOT - this will likely be an injector issue. Not cheap on the TD6, unfortunately. I'd have this looked at by a specialist before doing anything though.

Craig - our little motors made 218 and 231hp from BMW with only mild changes. And in highest tune (twin register turbos), it made 272hp. Almost 100hp/L. Not bad for the little 6 cyl. Razz

Mine is chipped to 210hp. I mentioned before that I was actually disappointed when I first drove a 3.6TDV8. Next to no soot on WOT either, btw.

Smoke has gone, well the smoke cloud that used to black out rearward vision has gone.
It took a few kilometres of driving but I am quite happy with the result.
No more embarrassment while driving with following traffic.

Just got to change the front and rear diff oil now and an engine oil change when that is due.

Lovin' the L322 Very Happy
