Don't know exactly. My mechanic just told me that he recommends replacing all this. I have to say we had a similar problem with our Landcruiser two years ago after they only replaced the compressor and we had to do it again (with the additional parts replaced this time) and it has been fine since. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Not necessary, this guy has worked for our company for over 20 years and he knows that the parts coming out will be checked by myself before they are thrown out. I insist on it with all the car work, just to make sure they realize that their work will be checked.

The work is done in our own workshop and I normally get my own parts (usually from a Dutch dealer) to make sure they are genuine parts !! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Well, that is one way of going about doing an AC repair: determining that there are no leaks and the electronics seem ok - so you replace everything mechanical in the system. Laughing

Replacing the drier should be par for the course when opening the AC, but compressor and expansion valve? Seems unlikely...

Then again, as long as you're happy. Better than having to go back 6 times.

The compressor did die and its "crap" went into the system (I have the old parts in the boot). What worries me is whether a 7 year old car with only 80,000 km already has a failed compressor (the A/C works a lot here and probably also in Texas where it came from). The system didn't leak, there was enough coolant still in it. Maybe it was the two years sitting still in a car yard here that did not have a good effect on the system.

On our other car (Toyota Landcruiser) we had a failed compressor about 2 1/2 year ago and they only replaced the compressor and a few months later it failed again. Then they had to replace the entire system and it has been fine ever since.

I am worried that they don't put enough lubricant in the system and that that is why the compressors fail.

Anyway, it is working and I hope it is the last time I have a problem. All in all the repair was not too expensive, full day work and still only about 200 Euro in labour, assuming the parts are same price as in Europe (unlikely, usually it is a bit more expensive here). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

The receiver drier sits in the high pressure line before the expansion valve. Generally, you won't get anything past that even with a minor explosion Smile

The compressors come per filled with oil and there is generally more than enough for the system. I have heard of relatively few cases where the compressor died due to anything close to a lack of oil. But there are always firsts.

And the expansion valve is not that expensive. At labor rates like you seem to have it def seems worthwhile to replace everything if you go in once...

Hi Steve, the experience with the Landcruiser (granted, this particular Landcruisers reliability is far worse than any Range Rover I have heard of, I think its assembly was started on Friday afternoon by people that were sacked that day because they were crap, the parts were taken from the reject bins and it was finished on Monday morning by people that had never seen a car in their life, followed by years of abuse in the Middle East before our company bought it and shipped it here, but that is beside the point) made a bit apprehensive of just replacing the compressor.

It did fail without any warning. One minute everything was nice and cool and all of a sudden it was over. Like it seized up completely. When the belts were replaced about 1 1/2 half year ago, I believe they opened up the A/C and took everything of the front of the engine (fan belt and supercharger belt were replaced at the same time). Maybe there something went wrong, I don't know.

Anyway, it is working again Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
