What tyres?

As a newbie to the site and hopefully soon to the FFRR Cool I am sure this will have come up many times and I am equally sure there is no definitive answer! Still, I would like to canvass opinions and at least get a feel....

The car I am looking at (a 57 plate TDV8) currently has 20" rims shod with continentals. These are a road biased tyre and so will have to be changed before the winter if I buy it. My useage is mainly towing a car transporter trailer but I live a mile from the nearest road. A lot of the time I have to tow across muddy fields, and during the winter it has to deal with whatever the North East of Scotland weather can throw at it. I have a 4x4 tractor to remove the drifts from my drive, but manage to get the Disco stuck a couple of times a year on average!

My Disco is on All Terrains (a cheapo make that have been excellent) but my favourite tyre was the BFG Trac Edge. If these were still available, I would buy these, but sadly they are not.

So, to my dilemma, should I buy All Terrains for the 20" (if any good ones are available, and what size, current tyres are 255/50) or should I buy a set of 19" Rims and tyres, leaving the 20s for summer/spares?

All advice on suitable wheels and tyres will be most gratefully received.

I would get the 19" alloys and then shod them with your choice of tyre, maybe some vreds???

The choice for 19" is much better than 20" and the difference when driving is noticable as they are so much smoother.

I'm speaking from experience here of towing and trying everything from 18-20 in size and a few different tyres. The wranglers are the best all round in my opinion for the snow we get darn south but oop north I'd chose the vreds as they seem to get great reviews and wear well to boot!!! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Thanks for the swift replies (and the welcome BTW). I was thinking the 19s would be the way to go. I will now have to wait until I get off this boat (hopefully 2 weeks time) and see how I get on with getting a FFRR then I will contact some of the specialists on here.

Thanks again, Nick Using LR Products for over 30 years!
