Brake discs replacement

At what mileage on average does the disc brakes needed replacing? I've heard that once the discs worn down over 1mm, discs would need replacing, is this true?
Mine has done 36k, and I could feel the edge of the disc deffo worn down at least 1mm.

Also, I've heard that its best to change gearbox fluid at 40k, even tho its supposedly sealed for life.

I ask the question, because the dealer have promise a full service FOC..

Any advice would much appreciated Thumbs Up

If in doubt n brakes i would change them. i cant remember exactly when i changed mine but i think it was around 40,000 miles. Generally it depends on your driving style and the sort of journeys etc rather than mileage. If there is a lip on the Disc it sounds like it is tome to renew especially if paid for by dealer

Ahh..I see, I thought it has a drain plug at the bottom, and a fill plug somewhere half way up.

...so it has its own oil filter, and it does not have a drain plug? Is that right?

If like me you're used to working on old Land Rovers then yes it was just a case of a drain plug and a filler hole, dead easy!

Sadly, things have advanced a little now.

I remember doing this job on my Series 3 and seeing lots of bit of metal teeth in the drained oil....it didn't seem to bother the old girl, built to last back then! Discovery 4 HSE

Well...took it down today for a free service, and asked for the gearbox fluid change, he told me fluid alone would cost in the region of £110-£120. I guess the fluid must be really good then, anyway I've told him to go ahead, and also have those side steps fitted as well Thumbs Up

I've also asked him for a quote on front discs and pads fitted, he quoted me around £350 fitted, I think that is very reasonable, do you guys think its about right?

Sadly I don't, but the Indy I take mine too is NOT a Land Rover specialist, you don't need to be to fit brakes, any grease monkey can do those.

If I were you I'd be looking for a friendly local garage that does tyres, exhausts brakes etc and go down, have a bit of banter with them and they'll soon do deals for you.

For example, my local place does all 4 wheels balanced for me for £20. My local LRD wanted £23+VAT each corner! Discovery 4 HSE

They quoted me £400 fitted, as part of the deal of buying the TDV8 Smile

BTW someone over in the PH forum recommended this Landrover indy

http://www.a1-landrover-specialists.co.uk/

Anyone has any experience with them?
