Best Tyre & Trim - Dressing

There have been a few posts recently regarding the external plastic trim on the RR (mentioned has been the area such as the trim that runs the length of/ sits between the windscreen and bonnet. It does spoil the look of a shiny car if discoloured/ faded).

Over a week ago I used Gtechniq C4 on the plastic trim between the windscreen and the bonnet. Since then the car has been exposed to days of glorious sun and has been battered by torrentional rain on the motorway between Scotland/ England. The C4 finish remains unblemished.

The AG bumper/trim gel that I used on the black plastic at the bottom of the front bumper has been weathered off leaving it grey/ white chalky very faded looking.

Suggestions on this site range from rubbing oil on the trim to Gaz Ellio's recommendation of Turtle Wax Car Tyre Cleaner Extreme Nano-Tech Tyre Gel (which I'll try if the C4 comes off).

Threads on the [OCD] Detailing World Forum strongly endorse Gtechniq as being 'the' long lasting products.

One quote says:
' For long lasting try Gtechniq T1 Tyres and Trim (£13.00 for 250ml). Very durable and I often get four months plus from it, and is great on the tyres as you'd expect...

For permanent try Gtechniq C4 Plastic Trim Restorer (£22.50 for 15ml or £42.50 for 30ml) and get between three and five years out of it. C4 is more expensive especially for the amount you'll get, but a small amount really does go a long way.

Also sign up at Gtechniq and get a discount.

I actually use wax shoe polish, the type that comes in the bottle with the little foam applicator on the end & Morrisons supermarkets stuff is best. Be careful not to get "scuff cover" as this washes off. The tyre & trim dressers sold in car places washes off really quickly & of couse you have to buy more to keep up the good look of your car, all this at exorbitant prices. The shoe wax is particulary good on tyres as it adds wax & black colour to tyre sidewalls, this also blocks out UV light which damages tyres. I have used this polish for years & it was recommended by a mate that does car valetting. I also use the wax on my caravan tyres & the anti UV qualities help as caravan tyres usually suffer most from sidewall damage. Once you've tried using shoe wax on your black trim you'll never use the normal products again.

Here are the results on the back of my old Discovery & remember this was a car that I regularly did serious off roading in.

I tried this Turtle Wax tyre and trim gel @ Halfords. £7.49 for 500 ml. White, very nice smelling gel. Really easy to work in with one of those small square dishwasher sponges. Buffs off with polish cloth, no horrible residue like AG and leaves a non greasy looking standard finish. Don't know about durability but I put it on that plastic tray at the bottom of the windscreen and it didn't take much to make it come up nicely so wouldn't be too much trouble every few weeks if neede.
