V12!?!? Shocked Shocked Shocked
At least there will be someone around who's jealous of the gas mileage mine gets. Mr. Green

Oui.

I've got the petrol V8, which is wonderful, except for the mileage. I'm assuming a V12 will be even worse.

I'd like to see another V8 petrol, maybe slightly smaller and a bi turbo instead of supercharged would be good.

Out of curiosity, why a turbo over a supercharger. No lag with a SC. I thought turbos worked best in smaller engines, but I'm ready to learn.

It is all down to emissions testing sadly. On the EU test cycle, a turbo never really comes on boost, whearas a supercharger will have an impact at low revs. 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

Turbo chargers are slightly more efficient and offer far more gains in terms of tuning potential, take the 5.5 V8 bi turbo offered in the current Mercedes AMG range, standard BHP is around 550, people are getting 680 ish with just a custom remap, likewise look at the V10 version of the Audi RS6 and what power gains can be had out of that, JLRs V8 Supercharged would be a lot more expensive and awkward to get to that kind of power.

I think the Supercharger suits the Range Rover well. I certainly prefer it than the turbo engined Range Rover I had before (TDV8). There's not much point in comparing a Range Rover with an AMG Merc or RS6 Audi, totally different cars. I can't see any point in tuning a SC Range Rover, power is more than adequate for the type of vehicle. Who needs 680BHP in a Range Rover? What for?

I don't think it's really fair to compare the TDV8 with a bi turbo V8 petrol, don't get me wrong the TDV8/SDV8 is a great diesel engine and offers great performance and economy, when I upgrade to a newer RR it will be the engine I will go for.
With the likes of the Cayenne Turbo, ML63 etc I think Land Rover will have to change the V8 Supercharged, the fact is some people do like an extremely performance orientated 4x4(I don't really see the point either although I appreciate what they can do a lot) and in terms of outright performance the RR and more so the RRS as it is more a direct competitor to the other two I mentioned, are a bit behind.
The RR/RRS still has both beaten on interior, looks and off road ability and I'd still pick one as would many others but a 600 BHP flagship model would really help it match or better its competition across the board.

Surely this is where the RRS SVR comes in.

8 mins 14 secs around the Nurburg is not exactly slow - and beats the Porsche/Merc/BMW competitors….

I think there's lots you can do with a supercharged engine to make it more powerful and more efficient.

Firstly, get rid of that awful belt drive. Power it with an electric motor so it's spun up by demand and not by engine revs.

Secondly, put a power recovery turbine in the exhaust and feed it into the electrical system.

Incidentally, turbo's are going in the same direction. Won't be long now before we have them spun up initially on electrical power while they're waiting for exhaust to spin the turbine.

I'm not saying superchargers are bad, I've had 2 in 55 AMG engines and loved the torque, just that they are more time consuming and harder to tune than a turbo engine, that with the slightly better efficiency is why I prefer a turbo engine.

It's the efficiency that's driving that not the tuning. Manufactures don't really care if after market tuners find them easy to tune or not.

Either way both superchargers and turbochargers have plenty of development potential in them. Thumbs Up

Exactly!!, if love to see a big V8 with the twincharged set up VW used on their 1.4 engine a while back, that would be interesting.
