Gearbox rebuild needed - recommended companies?

Hi all. I've got the rumbling from the torque convertor. Big Cry I've had the oil and filter done a few months ago which cured it till now.
I've spoken to my local garage (Penn autos) who do alot of work on landies.
Anyway, I've been advised to get the box rebuilt at the same time (80k on the clock).
Quote = £2500 all in. Shocked

I've googled around and come up with birch 4x4 in Liverpool and powertrain transmissions in brum.
both would be a train ride but I've no problem with that.
What I'm asking is; does anyone have experience of these companies? Or is there anyone you recommend? what kind of price did you pay?
Cheers

Talking of Birch 4x4 in Liverpool, if you go on eBay and find their 'auctions' for Range Rover transmission rebuilds you’ll see they show this photo of a ZF 5HP24 in pieces :

Very nice, except that’s my photo taken in my garage at home showing a transmission that I was working on and Birch 4x4 have nicked it off the forum to pass off as an example of their own work. Anyway, I thought I’d better post up the photo showing the other end of the workbench so that they’ve now got the complete set.

Birch did mine as I wanted a cheap repair.
Will admit it's a Censored hole but car seems fine £1300 inc new torque converter and very easy to deal with. Mine was a blue one! Smile

If it is shifting smoothly then I would leave it, you will find that the oils and filter change will make smoother in any case, so do that first and see how it feels. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Having just joined this forum and made maximum use of the 'search' function ( Mr. Green ), I gave those guys a call this morning (just to discuss the gearbox oil flush/change and filter mod), and found them incredibly helpful and informative, so many thanks for that.

Full newb (to this LR forum) intro to follow later. Cool
