Does this sound right??

Not being handy with the spanners I am after advice on the following:

MOT due, so after a bit of soul searching decided to try my local MOT/garage after finding out the owner is an official Land Rover nutcase, various defenders/discos etc all owned by him litter the forecourt. Anyway....put it in knowing it would fail and braced myself for the inevitable call which duly came.

Needs : Front drop links, front bushes, o/s front susp airbag, rear brake pipes, front pads. I was aware of all apart from brake pipes.

Cost - £700

Seems a tad low to me, or maybe I am too used to large amounts on the poor thing

Your thoughts much appreciated

Rosco

The cost doesn't seem too bad, but I'd question the front airbag...what is the reason for having to replace that?

If all is genuine, then Bob's yer uncle! Thumbs Up

Sounds about right from a friendly indie... I'd ask him to fit a Delphi airbag and not a Dunlop one, which I imagine he's quoted for as they are the cheapest....

I'd also ask him to fit original or OEM parts, he'll have quoted for cheap Britparts.... Pete

You really ought to replace both front airbags if that's the case, as they consist of the bag and the strut as a complete unit, so not a good idea just to do shocker and spring on 1 wheel only.

As Haylands says, fit the Delphi ones. I got a pair from Dan at Duckworths. They were best part of £600 without fitting, but that was nearly 2 years ago.

They are heavy motors, so don't cut corners on cheap parts on the suspension, or it'll tend to chew them up and spit them out.

I try to get original equipment parts if the LR boxed ones are extortionate......

But to answer your question, seems a bit cheap, check quality of parts as already advised.

He needs an airbag as it's on it's bumpstops overnight... stated in a previous thread... Pete

Thanks Guys will speak to him re airbags, I thought both would need changing but he is adamant only one needs done. Booked in Monday for all the work so will see results. Its a spit and sawdust type place but they are an MOT station,. Was sick of the other chaps sending it off elsewhere first to 'see what it needs', feel quite comfortable with these guys which is half the battle. Wish I had some technical knowhow, but I dont Thumbs Up I can hit a golf ball though.... Rolling with laughter

Rosco,

My experiences of golf are a bit like my forum related DIY attempts. Before taking that final swing at it, I tee it up and assess the hazards ahead by thinking aloud to anyone who will care to listen. All in the hope of playing it just right. Inevitably, as I recoil, thinking I'm about to nail it, I take my eye off the ball, miss completely and the forum, as does the wee ball, sits there laughing at me! Laughing

At least you're good at something! Rolling with laughter

That sounds like a fair amount of work for £700. Be interesting to know what make of parts will be used.

Thumbs Up

Despite what he says, I would insist on BOTH suspension airbags being replaced - never a good idea to put new parts just on the one side! 2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

Glass half full... I think it'll be a genuine quote, maybe with a bit of bespoke tweaking from Rosco re the make of parts he wants to be used, which might add a wee bit to the price. Thumbs Up

Just a quick update, all of the above work was done with the addition of brake pipes front to rear as they 'fell apart in my hands' or Ayrahire words to that effect! So I now have an MOT with NO advisories, there's a first for everything.

Cost, quoted c. £700

Actual including all pipes - £660.00

Bloody marvellous Bow down Thumbs Up
