Thanks for the help Paul.
I'll give that a try in the morning and report back.
The Rangy is tucked up and asleep now. Lol
In the file browser should it show up as camera?

It seems to stick out quite far at the bottom compared to mine do you have to cut the holder down more to get flush?

Well I've found out that the USB sockets on my head unit are fine!
The trouble I was having with feeding music into one was because I'd put some stuff onto a SD card and put that into a USB card reader which I plugged into the USB socket. It was a trial run job and of course was doomed from the start, because the read speed of the card reader couldn't match that of the head unit. Except that I didn't realise that until I'd had all the problems.
Once I got my brain in gear and thought about it I put the same music onto a pen drive, and hey presto, it works fine!
As for the camera. Well, that's a different story.
It seems from lots of reading on line that USB webcams will not, as a general rule, work with Android, period.
There are some apps available that purport to allowing a webcam to work on a phone or tablet, AS A WEBCAM, but make the point that 'this app can't cooperate with other Android apps'. So not going to work with DVR apps.
So it would seem that the Erisin camera has been developed especially by them to work with their head units. Although their advertising suggests otherwise.
Someone else may know different to this, in which case please let me know, as my forth attempt at communication with Erisin has again met with failure.
I'm now looking at trying a convential reversing camera, feeding it with the required voltage from an outside source, and putting it's video feed into the appropriate pins in a USB plug.
Dave

We'll knock me down with a feather!!
All the twaddle I've just spouted and you have an ordinary one working ok Paul!
That takes me right back to why then doesn't mine recognise the cam I bought from PC world?
And how come after reading everywhere that webcams won't work with Android - they do!

Dave crawls under a stone!

the thing to remember is that the android part is one of many components on this unit, all of which is interfaced to a master control unit that provides all the non android items such as DVD player or the revers cam inputs audio and video outputs and inputs are switched as needed by the MCU. The MCU is hierarchically speaking above Android

Android itself and the hardware it's made to run on does not natively handle , Sound Controls: Balance, Fader, Audio levels, Video controls Aux input, rearview camera with separate switching, DVD etc. Steering wheel controls and Canbus interface Front face buttons/knobs and illumination I-pod interfacing etc .

That's why this is a custom build of android and there are a lot of "Native Apps" that use the android interface to drive the MCU and the sub components

Included in the build are some generic USB drivers so most things will work ok but it is very basic support , you may find that the cam from PC world has sound autofocus etc. that wont work so in this case the cheap and cheerful device will be much better.

Whewwww thank the Lord all sorted now.
The camera I'd bought ( PC World £14:99) is working ok. Although it isn't showing up on the 'car record' software pre installed in the head unit, I thought it worth just installing Daily Roads voyager to see what happened, and there it is!
So I'm all done now.
Thank you to the guys who kindly helped me.
Next thing is to sell all the old units, which will hopefully fund the fitting of an amp and active crossovers for the sound system 🙉

This has turned out to be a very interesting thread...

I tried a while ago with another Erisin unit. plugged in and it worked (keeping all my old gear in the car) but the sound was not great and it was very slow. I guess the units have come a long way since then though.

I'm very tempted to go for it but wanted to check a couple of questions.

I've had the stage 2 amp upgrade from our friend Baris and now my stock unit sounds really great - it would be a shame to lose this now. Has anyone found a way to get the new unit to correctly use the dap to drive the speakers without massive re wiring.? I see talk of aux outputs if the amp has aux in (which I could ask Baris to do for me). Would that then be plug and go..?

Has anyone got DAB through the unit or will the DTV (bought at the same time) tune into DAB stations..?

Has anyone kept the old head unit but swapped it out for the RR Midi unit (which I guess performs the same functions but is smaller to fit in the love box better)..?

Thanks all in advance.. Ash

Going back to the adapter that you got Paul, to give you a wider field of view, how is that fitted to the camera?
It looks as though there is a threaded fitting into which the lens screws. If that's the case how does that attach to the camera?
This morning I'm fitting the camera into the car and I find that it does have quite a narrow field of view, so perhaps one of those wide angle adapters would be a good idea, although I'm not sure if it will fit the camera.
