Thanks, Joe. So this is the earlier compressor? I bought the car only a couple of weeks ago and the previous owner gave me a receipt for the replacement of one strut, all sensors and the reconditioning of the compressor. The filters look brand new so I have no reason to doubt him. I was puzzled that when I removed the (valve, I think) at the tee on the spare wheel well, there was no rush of air and the system didn't depressurise. This must mean that there's a valve further down the line. I have the "Rave" workshop manual on CD and after reading about the air suspension system I'm even more confused! What puzzles me most is the lack of LED lights on the centre console. The switch is totally non-responsive (of course). I also have the dreaded "Air Susp. Inactive" message. I haven't hot wired the compressor yet but it must be working or the suspension wouldn't be on maximum height. I have checked the fuses and they're OK.

Ah, OK. If your dash lights are out and your have the "bong" inactive message your air suspension is in hard lock out. Will need a suitable diagnostic tool to read any faults and reset. No alternatives to this unfortunately. Confused

Regarding the pressure relief valve in your first picture, your are correct about there being a valve further down the line. The pipe that disappears through the body heads off to the main valve block at the front of the air reservoir (tucked up under the front seat RHS) .

OK to drive?

Thanks, Joe. The car performs pretty much as it did before the "bong" message appeared. It corners, rides and steers normally so I've been driving it "normally". Since I bought it the height control has not been operating (it hasn't settled or risen in the way that I now know it should). My only fear is that with the suspension extended to that height I may damage the CVs or at the very least, the boots. I just looked back at the pics of the car before I bought it and it seems to be at pretty much the same height...but there was no "bong" message. Is it possible to release some of the pressure from the system to make it ride lower?

When the car 's air suspension faults to inactive it usually sets itself at normal ride height. Based upon what you are saying are you sure it is in off road/extended height ? If it is recommended to stick with no more than 30 mph due to road handling characteristics in off road height.

I wouldn't recommend trying to drop the heights manually (e.g. releasing air at each bag). I guess it could be done, but you could do more harm than good.

Best option is to get faults read and suspension reset, then check faults again. Personally, you will struggle (financially & with the spanners) to run the first generation L322 without a suitable diagnostic tool. .

Diagnostics

Thanks for your replies and useful input, Joe. I suppose that I knew it's inevitable that I would end up taking it to a service centre it to have the diagnostics read. Problem is for me that the nearest one is 150km away and basically takes a day out of my life to get it there; the work done; and the trip home. I was hoping that there was a simple remedy that could save me the trouble (and the $$s). I'm retired now but in part of my early working life I was a diesel fitter (old-tech...1960s) and I can turn a spanner. We all love our modern motors but the question remains...can we fix them ourselves???

Can we fix it - yes we can!

Not been near a main dealer or indy for repairs for @ 4 years, since getting myself some diagnostic tools, first the All Comms from Storey in Colorado USA, then the IIDTool from GAP diagnostic, along with an android smartphone with Torque Pro and an ELM 327 Bluetooch OBD adapter. You need these to identify and clear faults that you won't otherwise be able to diagnose at home (too many LR specific codes). Other than that, it is just spanners like the old days Smile Given your distance from any useful repair shop, get one! .

It only bloody worked! I think this forum is superb.

I would like to buy the proper JLR part. Dan at Duckworths Would you know the part number and cost?

Genuine part number is LR025940 for 2009 onwards, costs £25.

Genuine part number is RQV 500050 for 2006-2009, costs about £15.

Hey, guys... First: thanks for the input from you all. It's really appreciated Very Happy
Last: I used the car this morning and of course the suspension was inactive...but then...I got into her to do a short trip and the suspension lights came on; she levelled herself; she kneeled and she pumped up and down through the entire range. What happened? Search me, but I'm glad that it did!

One of my co-workers from days past had a saying for this : problems that go away by themselves have a tendency to return by themselves. Someone added : at worst possible time.

So better take this respite to get the parts (service kit ??) so you can fix it the next time it goes BONG. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!
