Darn it - why didn't I see this thread sooner. I'd have happily "pottered" down to Salisbury for the day out, looked far more gentle than the other trip I took the FF on (and consequently would have been far more unlikely to destroy several hundred quids worth of sub-1k tyres...).

Must keep a closer eye Sad

i've often thought about taking the FF off road, and looked at some green laning vids on youtube, i see guys in old classics and discos, wrecking their side panels, trying to prove it is possible, 'because it's there' etc. this isnt my idea, but nor is driving a long way, just to drive down a track, and some puddles. (not saying that was the salisbury plain dayout..) but it could have been dryer, harder, etc...

I fancy a bit, with my side steps off etc. - if only to get her caked in mud for the neighbours to see, that i dont always cossett her etc. i did see a 4x4 'weekender' advertised a few years ago, not far from london with an off road course, one for road cars, one for 'specialists', but they couldnt gauruntee it wouldnt be chwed to pieces, time i got my slot etc. well done though chaps, it makes sense to do it in a group, to be able to rely on a tow-out, and tips etc. any other days out that people see advertised, i would be interested also. -(nearish to surrey) i guess the distance to salisbury plain 80 miles is within budget next year.

just dont fancy a deep wade into electrical issue chaos! i do remember a great day in france somewhere, with the (then young) kids in the car, going over the roughest deep puddled road ever! as a short cut. -it became our favourite start of the day-out routine! (in the old P38)

lets off road!

Salisbury Plain Day

Hello Paul
They were indeed marshals but for a iron man event that was in progress, the byway was open with no TRO in place and thus legal for us, in the interests of safety I decided to reverse our route so as not to interfere with their event.
Wiltshire council work closely with the MOD giving plenty of notice of any range days or closures they even have a website SPTA it's highly unusual for closures on the plain but it does happen from time to time, the RMP duty room in Bulford have full details of any closures and can be called for information.
I have to commend WCC for their work on keeping our byways rights of way open they do a stirling job unlike some other county councils the army wanted to close a load of tails thats byways that lead no where so WCC said ok but you must open the equivalent byway mileage that is being lost on alternative routes which is what happened the army were very fair.
Driving up on the plain is a real pleasure but you must stick to the byways or the land warden will come and find you.
Cheers
