Driving Range on 3.6 - steady motorway miles

Any advice on the driving range of a 3.6, based on steady (70 to 75mph) motorway miles? Based on average fuel consumption results quoted in a number of posts (anywhere from 25mpg to 30+mph), and given a 105 litre fuel tank; the maths would say between 575 miles to 690 miles to a full tank. Is that realistic?

I would have a 200 mile round trip to the office when I need to be there, so a good range is key; my planning to buy a FFRR (in the price range 16-19k)is at an early stage.

This is the best I have had on a 150 mile steady run from London to Sheffield in my 3.6 TDV8...






I'd say my average on a motorway run is circa 28/29 mpg Thumbs Up

I use my 2005 TD6 every day for a commute to work and back (round trip of 110 miles). I do 550 miles per week at speeds of between 45 and 70 mph on average.
I normally put in about 90 litres of devil's juice each week, and reckon I would get about 610 to 650 miles out of a full 100 litre tank.

Fuel consumption computers (Trip 1 and Trip 2) always shows 26.4mpg, but I do a brim to brim calculation each week and it works out at around 29 to 30mpg.

In the real world, you never get that close to emptying the tank - I've been into the mid 90's and that was a good few miles past the computer telling me the range was zero Shocked

I think low 500's is reasonable - but I don't think I've ever done a full tank at those speeds all the way - 450 is my norm.

If you live anywhere near a mountain you will have no chance of that mileage.
Ive had a 3.6 and on long runs and up and over mountains i would only gat an average of 23MPG over a years driving.
If you're doing mainly motorways you will maybe get 25MPG. Thumbs Up 2020 Porsche Panamera Turbo Hybrid (V FAST)

Get about 450-500 on a run but never let it get too low so tricky to tell. A return to the south of France from derby needs me to stop and put 3/4 tank in about 1hr into France, 2/3 tank in Dijon, which gets us there, then brim it when leaving from about 1/4, 3/4 tank in Dijon and fill up from 1/4 just before the tunnel...... So somewhere around 3-3 1/2 tanks return for about 1900 miles......

But that is a full on cruise only. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Only had mine for a couple of weeks but do 130 a day to work and back. clear motorways is the key to this. The 3.6 seems to be doing around the 28/29 mark if the route is clear at a steady speed.

Braking and accelerating again drops that down to around 23/24 in my experience (but it is early days for me) Ash

Thanks for the real-life results. I'm on the M4 almost door to door for 100 miles, so if I plan for low 500s that would be a reasonable target (5 trips before a refill). That's good information for me, and helps me factor fuel into my budget.

I've read and re-read a large number of posts over the last couple of weeks, great education in all thing FFRR. Keep it up!!

I would also try to stick to the speed limit, as you get faster the consumption drops off a cliff. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I do a 50 mile daily commute, mixture of country lanes A roads and city driving and I get 510 to 530 and fill about 90 litres, best I have done on a steady motorway cruise at 70ish is 600

Top tips to get good mpg...
1. Drive nice and steady, anticipate the road and traffic ahead. Instead of hard braking and accelerating, anticipate and take your foot off the pedal...let the engine slow the vehicle then maintain a gentle acceleration.
2. Keep your tyres at the proper pressures.
3. Keep the vehicle well maintained and serviced.
4. Don't drive it like you've just stolen it!

But most of all.....Enjoy it, after all you'll be driving a Range Rover Very Happy Very Happy Laughing

^ I take it you never tried the American Interstate highways in the time if the "double nickel " (55 mph). It's a big country.

(Okay, ours is bigger, but out of the urban areas, it's more like a Atrunk type system rather than a motorway. Many Canadians will travel through the US when going coast to coast as it's rather faster (even when it was 55)and the "gas" is cheaper.
