Filler cap retainer strap replacement

So this is irritating me, although I have never (yet) dropped the filler cap:

So I thought I'd repair, cut the ends clean, slid on heat shrink sleeving, tacked the ends together with super glue, then liberally applied rubber solution, slid the heat shrink into place and shrank it - worked but not entirely satisfactory:

Then I thought, you have dozens of tape recorder drive belts from a previous life, replace the strap! So I cut a drive belt to length, crimped on some "eyes" on the ends, removed the plastic filler cap cover (easy) and refitted as shown - decent job, now I can't drop the filler cap and scrabble around on the floor in the petrol station to retrieve it, even if I wanted to - and i can't think why I would.

Its as good as the original and it cost next to nothing Very Happy Geoff

Like your fix, I have the same problem, and wasn't I prepared to pay the £30 for a replacement cap and retainer! Regards

I dont have any tape recorder drive belts lying around but I'm sure with a bit of searching about i can find something which will suffice pretty sure i have some eyes etc and I do have plenty of bits of black bell wire which might work.... time for a hunt. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I can easily supply the belts, each belt will do this mod at least 3 times. Just checking with Stan where I stand re: forum rules etc. Geoff

I've had the go ahead from Stan if you want a drive belt please gift £1 via PayPal to geoffsmi@gmail.com and put your address in the comments and I'll post 'em out. The £1 is for p&p and the belt.

Will be next week before I can post any. Geoff

Good point re black paint but I was in a rush, also it's not a self tapper it's a threaded screw (M4) that fits perfectly tightly in the hole (oh err missis) and is tightened so the thing still swivels. I think a self tapper would do in fact thinking about it I have some black ones - doh! Banging Head Geoff

Thanks Craig - its a mod to simply stop the filler cap from falling to the ground and maybe even getting lost or broken - it works and it looks better than a bit of snapped rubber. Black paint and shrink wrap notwithstanding Very Happy
Oh and it saves thirty quid Very Happy Very Happy Geoff
