How Noisy is a V8 Supercharged?

Hi Folks

I had a look at a 2012 V8 Supercharged AB yesterday here in Kampala. 2012, 71000 miles. I've never seen one before!

Needless to say is was beautiful, has almost everything I think including those deployable side runners, starts on the button. Message on the dash stated service overdue.

Lifted the bonnet and it struck me as very noisy for a V8! Almost rattely. My only experience with V8s is from my D2 V8 which sounded much better than this. Put the bonnet down and again struck me as noisy for a petrol.

Are they like that?

Cheers Jerry

My SC is very quiet, suspect something is adrift with the engine Regards

Thank you for the replies

Can anybody elaborate on the issues and what happens if nothing is done, ie how serious is it?

Cheers. Jerry

The 5.0 is also direct injection which can sound a bit rattly. The injectors are quite noisy for some reason.

I have a 4.2 in my jag and you can't hear it running on tick over

Blip the throttle and it "growls" like a scalded cat.

The engine should be silent with no rattles at all.

Thanks Guys,

I went back to have another look.

On start up it is noisy, no doubt about it, rattly. Then once the choke comes off is very quiet.

Quiet a strong smell of petrol, bloke stated its been sitting for sometime, needs a good run!

I checked, Its been sitting in a bond shed for 6 months.

Cheers, Jerry

My newly acquired 5.0 s/c is also a bit rattly at idle. The dealer I bought it from said there was no problem but that as it is under the two year warranty I could get if fixed if it gets worse. Above mzplcg suggested the 5.0 Direct Injection may be more rattly than the 4.2. Any other 5.0 owners with comments? 2012 5.0L S/C

mine is the old 4.2 and is whisper quiet.

I don't know why direct injection would be louder, as electronic injectors have a slight "ticking" sound so if anything direct should be quieter??????

Neither do I know, it just is. I have the 5.0 Rangie (2nd one now) and SWMBO used to have the 4.2 Jag. The Jag was definitely quieter.

I've the Jag 4.4 NA. It's quiet when started cold. Once warm, it is almost silent.

DI petrol engines are just a little noisier, swmbo has a direct injection Skoda and it can sound a little diesely at times, when pulling off from a hill start for example but at Tickover it is quiet. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Def should be no smell of petrol! Rings may be stuck (petrol fumes pushed past in to crank case vent system). Redex or similar may help.

The 4.2 SC on tickover at warm can be so quiet you wonder if it's running - I know this cos NRK tried to start his up one day when we were sitting at the Eurotunnel and found it was already on.

The 5.0 can suffer from a timing chain tensioner issue, which leads to rattly timing chains. Mine had this and I had it done under warranty. It;s a huge job, took them an entire week as there's so much strip down and rebuild work. I saw a picture of my car while the work was being done and I was almost sick.

If there's a choice, walk away, as the petrol smell sounds suspect. Discovery 4 HSE
