Trans Fail Safe - Gearbox issue

Well I have searched but can't find my issue - Wife called me today to say this had come on the display, 4.4 Petrol with 107,000 miles. Battery is new and I used the car all weekend with no issues.

Plugged in my GAP IID tool and got the following error code:

1/1 021 TURBINE SPEED SENSOR FAULT GENERAL FAULT.

Does anyone have any clues? suggestions?

The car pings into Trans Fail Safe as soon as you pull away. Reverse is fine and it selects hill decent and low range all fine.

Darren

That’s a very specific fault. The only time I’ve seen that one before is when I repaired a forum member’s transmission and the screw holding the speed sensor retaining plate in place had come loose.

I would drop the oil pan and take a look if I were you. You could also first check the sensor resistance at pins 5 & 6 of the 16-pin connector on the back of the transmission. It should be between 285 & 365 ohm.

Let me know if you need a replacement sensor. I have loads of the things.

I have had the pleasure of seeing his man cave and I can confirm it is cleaner than an ISO1 clean room, it is truly a sight to behold... Pete

Thanks Phil

Thank you Phil, that is a brilliant reply and really helpful.

It's a bit beyond my expertise to be draining the box and cracking it open but I will ask my local guy to have a look before I ship the car off to the gearbox specialist.

I have been quoted £2500 to recon the box by a recommended specialist in St Neots if it's a worst case.

Annoying thing is that the box has been performing perfectly in the 18 months I have owned the car, not a hint of trouble until now.

Thanks all for the help this far, I will update as I go with what happens.

Darren

Just to update this post and help anyone else that gets this problem.

My gearbox issue has been resolved, it was the turbine sensor and thanks to RRPhil for sending me a known good one and his excellent write up my mechanic was able to sort this out for me - very pleased that this has been resolved as a lot of gearbox repairers prefer to just go straight to recon everything rather than diagnose and replace the failed part.

Thanks to all for info (especially Phil) and once again the forum has been a great place to source info and support.

Darren
