So, are they just painted metal without a cap?

These are mine. I had them with the new rims last year, I think they are anodised. The front.

And the rear.

The rears are fairing better than the fronts.
I might change them for some black coated nuts I have, and paint the anodised ones.
oh and I don't use wheel acid at all.
