I'm away for a couple of weeks so I can't check. Any further tips. How many hours to do the O-ring and water pump?
Thanks

First time around give your self 6 hours. Pete it's a xxxx in the butt to have to do it, but I'm glad I did mine, as while doing it I also cleaned out the intake, checked the egrs, and replaced a few seals, (throttle body, butterfly valve, egr pipe gasket) and to me it looked like they had been leaking. I've never seen smoke again since no matter how hard I boot It.

If I bought another one it would be the first thing I'd do.

It seems a bit daunting but take your time it's fairly straight forward and the housing is quite cheap.

Thanks again Paul.

The service history indicates a coolant leak was repaired in March 2013 by replacing the thermostat housing. The leak continued so two months later pulled it out again to replace the "thermostat housing and oil filter housing rings". Assuming that's correct I shouldn't need another housing yet. Tell me if Im kidding myself.

Ive only noticed this lately. Im wondering if the leak is connected to the alternator being replaced in Nov 2015, which involves removing the coolant tank.

I will know more when I get back and can have a look. ______________________________

Pete have you actually tried bleeding the system? I suspect you still have a leak but there's a little plastic dial on the top of the expansion tank which you open up, run the engine and it self bleeds. A search or the WSM should reveal the correct procedure. Ed

Is there any other 'jobs' or checks worth doing whilst doing the thermostat housing repair?

Have you done the EGRs? You'll have gained access to them by then. Ed

When you say coolant tank, are you referring to over flow tank. if that was leaking I'd expect you to see coolant onthe ground. Apparently the egr coolers can also leak, they are bolted to the end on the egrs.

Sounds like you are not seeing the leak onthe ground so it's either evaporating or leaking internally.

It's very difficult to see but with some probing around the thermostat housing can be isolated to be the cause.

I will see if I can find some pics to suggest where to look.

If it is an egr cooler leaking that's a easy replacement but I don't know cost. I have heard though if the egrs have been decommissioned you can by pass the egr coolers and problem is solved.

thanks again Paul.

I won't be home until next week to look. I haven't noticed any coolant on the ground.

By coolant tank I mean the plastic tank in our pic. The mechanic removed the tank to fit the new alternator at the end of last year.

Coolant does swirl around in the tank when the motor's warm indicating its still in the motor.

If its an EGR cooler Ill go the emulator route and bypass the cooler. ______________________________

Are the egr valves themselves, cooled?

So the egr valve itself doesn't have cooling water connections.

(Sorry, can't quite see)
