Sounding like an old slivercross pram

Hi folks,
My 06 s/c has started to sound like an old pram squeaking like crazy but only after 5mins of driving, stops when the car is stationary and also squeaks a bit when stationary and turning the steering, i am guessing its the passenger side ball joint going dry? Any guestimates for a fix cost?

cheers

2 ball joints at the bottom of each suspension strut, could be either of them. On each side the whole setup is a combination of 2 arms (1 includes the ball joint ) and ball joint.

You can buy complete kits for both sides on eBay for ~£160 - obviously not likely to be gen parts, more likely aftermarket. I'm about to buy a set. I'm not convinced that gen parts would definitely last longer where I live due to the salted roads and the driving I do. Plus I reckon the ball joints are under-specced for the size of the car, and so consider them almost a serviceable item that needs done regularly.

Hardest part of the job is getting the ball joint out of the hub carrier. The bolts holding it are normally rusted well in place, and the unit is a very tight fit into the carrier. Its a destruction method of getting them out in my books.

There are pictured posts on here showing how its done. I may photograph / video how I do it as well. V8 or else ...

If they are OK or it only does it when you steer then it could be the rack end, not the track rod end, but the bit that it fixes to and connects it to the steering rack, they have a nylon ball joint, it dries out and squeaks like a goodun when worn...

Easy to change but you need a huge socket to get it off... if you take it to a garage, they may say you need a new rack as some don't appreciate you can buy the rack ends separately...

The rear upper and lower hub bushes, which are Heim joints, squeak when they are worn and they can sound just like it's coming from the front, they will squeak if you rock the car whilst it's stationary... Thumbs Up Pete

could you not spray some joints, with say some motorbike 'chain lube' on a straw to get the affected area and drive it to see if you have 'found it' then deal accordingly, -i have to admit i had a sort of creak, that turned out to be a loose wheelnut. some people have had brake caliper 'noises', dont spray those.

what about the roll bar drop links? they are always on peoples lists, and are 'cheap' and easy to replace.

thanks all, defo seems to come from the front, strange that something needs to warm up before it starts, also does make the noise but not as loud when stationary and turning the wheels...

So to round this off, went into Landrover today for the brake recall, they did a health check all passed bar both sides antiroll bars warn, so I guess this is what's causing the noise...
What should I be paying to replace??

Anti roll bar what...???

They have drop links that fail regularly and two mounting rubbers that can wear but I doubt it, mine are 13 years old and done 150,000 miles and are still fine....

The drop links usually knock when they fail.... my money is still on the rack ends.... Thumbs Up

Personally I wouldn't let the main dealer anywhere near it, get them to do the recall and then take it to a decent independent to sort the squeak.... Thumbs Up Pete

Originals are around £30 each IIRC... hours work to change all four...

Hope it doesn't for your sake but I bet it still squeaks... Pete

The jury is out on that one I'm afraid, doesn't sound like ARB links or steering but then it always sounds funny when you record it....

just have to wait and see I think... Pete
