United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Autobiography SDV6 Orkney Grey
New member - 2013 Autobiography - 40k miles covered

Morning all!

Thought I'd sign up as i'm just at the stage where i'm playing with bits of our workhorse RR.

We've had the car since new in Aug 2013 and have just about covered 40k miles in it. It's my wife's daily and is used mostly for carting about our 8 month old son and our wee pug, Martha.

At the weekends it gets to stretch its legs however as the tow beast for my classic race car!

We love the car. It does absolutely everything we could want from a car and more. It really is a go anywhere and do anything vehicle as we can rock up at a classy hotel and look the part just as easily as we arrive at a mountain with the bikes on the towbar carrier.

It hasn't all been plain sailing sadly though. We have had more than our fair share of warranty issues but in fairness to LR and the local dealer here they have done their best to accommodate us with loan vehicles.

The warranty issues have been;

Front struts knocking - 3 times
Active roll bars
Sluggishness in pulling away (more on this later as I just remapped the thing and they've accepted that's the best result)
Computer/nav slow to respond
Bluetooth music very sensitive to phone position/location
Squealing brakes
Tailgate automation failing
Rear spoiler marking the piano black exterior rear pillars
Dark atlas bonnet moulding wearing through bonnet paint
TMPS failed
Drivers door controls failed
Steering wheel controls for volume failed
Tow bar electrics module seized in place and not springing out when towbar activated
Brake light switch sticking on

There are almost certainly a few more but that's enough for the moment!

Anyway, all have been sorted one way or another so we're happy now and see no reason why this car won't go on to do 100k in our hands. I did have a brief dalliance with a Cayenne recently and wondered what we could do spec-wise on one of their V8 models but it couldn't touch the RR on spec and value for money.

The car remained completely standard until last year. Original spec was;

Orkney Grey
Dark Atlas lower external trims
Black upper external trims
Almond dash, doors and suede upper trims
Black leather seats etc
Silver 21in Style 5 wheels

Then my wife wanted the car to look a little meaner. I guess Martha wasn't giving the car the right 'cred! haha

I went for;

Black RANGE ROVER badge sets from and rear
Black front grille
Black mirror caps
Painted original wheels Black and use them in winter
Black 22in Style 6 wheels as summer wheels

We also suffered the known flatspot in the SDV6 when pulling away from roundabouts so earlier this year I had the car remapped and it's completely resolved and so much better a driving car. No noticeable difference to consumption and even the LR techs, who we know well, think the car goes so much better than it did originally and this should be the way LR resolve the flatspot issue.

Other small changes are that I have fitted a pair of Bosch AU24 wipers as the sweep on the passenger side was poor. It looked like they would fit and they are extremely tight but they do the trick and are a worthwhile change.

For my racing I need to carry tools etc in the boot and sometimes oils etc so i have a boot liner with anti-slip matting in built that helps. It was very cheap from ebay but is very effective!

Finally, my wife complains that the rear windows still let a lot of sun in and onto my son's face. We live in Aberdeen so this is clearly a two or three times a year issue but the way she goes on about it you would think it's daily. Anyway, I looked for window shades some time ago and there were none made for the L405 but just recently I found a company SPAM - REPORT THIS POST that sell a rear window shade pack. They are a basic mesh that is mounted on a wire frame and it literally clips into position. The functionality of the rear windows remain but the effect is quite profound. I'm impressed! Not too expensive either at around £100 iirc.

Anyway thats the lot. I will keep an eye on these forums for any interesting things people are doing to these things.

Here are some pics of the car. The first batch are of it new and the last one is the only one I have of it at present.

Haha Just!!

Hey, I've had Subaru's with their chocolate pistons and my last daily was a 997.1 with their 'consumable' engines. Thankfully neither died on me! Cool Current Fleet;

Hi bra10j
Welcome. I am interested in the remapping, has this effected your insurance or not?
I also have the FF v6 and its nice to see you also have the Meridian Signature sound system and Rear screen.

Hi,

Yes the sound system was a must. The rear screens have hardly been on if i'm honest but our son will soon be at the stage where he wants to see the tv in the car! We do watch the front screen quite a lot when we're out. I use it on race weekends to keep up with the F1 or touring cars. Cool

I didn't have any issues with insurance. My policy is with quite a unique insurer though as it covers all my cars as a fleet. Current Fleet;

Welcome! Thumbs Up

Looks good with all the dark atlas mods and the black wheels. What about adding a black roof?

2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Nara Bronze

Youre on a smilar mileage to me and by the sounds of it a lot of the same issues, namely:-

Frunt struts replaced,
Active roll bars replaced,
Boot mechanism with a mind of its own
Mapping/flat spot...sometimes but not always,
Bluetooth sensitivity
Computer wont/slow to respond
Seem to be ok on the trim front though.

Unfortunately my local dealer has been pretty useless in identifying and resolving issues so I'll probably defect to another marque like usual pretty soon, although I always seem to come back. Must be a sucker for punishment! '14.5 SDV8 Nara Bronze for sale

D3RMO,

We have considered the roof too. My fear there is that the wife will see what's possible and will ask me to get the whole car done black! Current Fleet;

Aeroresh,

Yes sounds a familiar story. Sorry to hear your local dealer has been so poor. That's probably the only thing that has been keeping me in the car! Current Fleet;

Welcome to the site. Good to hear from you. I had almost the same car that you have for my first L405 and it was great. I've just bought my third one today and know it'll be just as good as the other two, or is that just the internal optimist in me? Thumbs Up

A friend spotted my car and took a pic of it. I thought it was a good shot and showed the car as it stands today.
