Which tyre brand to choose - any experience welcomed

Got to replace some of the tyres on the SC and am currently looking at the Pirelli Scorpion Zero's but also saw the Michelin Latitude Sport 3 on AJS Tyres site and hadn't seen any mention of those in the (many many) posts on tyres. Any views on the best for the 50 SC ? my current set (Conti Cross's) have worn badly on the shoulders.

Mainly road use but would like something adequate for winter and the occasional off the tarmac etc. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

Shoulder wear would indicate a potential alignment adjustment required, really worthwhile getting it done properly. Can really change the dynamics of the car. I've run Yokohamas, Toyo proxes, Vreds etc. TBH I can't tell the difference, as I drive to the limit all the time, just don't go for the budget brands. Sorry not really any help, I'll get my coat...

I've not got any brand loyalty on this either, but haven't had a 'bad' tyre. I have some Eagle F1's on currently, they are shot and it's booked in for new ones next week. I have chosen Scorpion's as they were the best deal Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Thanks for the quick replies - worn shoulders are most likely down to over enthusiastic use of the loud pedal in the 5.0SC but good advice on the tracking.

I too don't have brand loyalty and am quite swayed towards the scorpions. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

I've been a firm fan of the Pirelli Scorpions on my SC. I've had Conti's on and i would never get another set as long as i've got a hole in my a***! You just have to look at them and they've worn out. Tony

This may sound mad to some but I'll put my two-penneth in for what it's worth. Four good quality tyres will set you back the thick end of £1,000.00 but something you may wish to consider is buying a full set of "new car take off" wheels and tyres. It's a little bit more of a faff but for instance wheels and tyres that are described as new, just taken from a brand new L405 and are apparently unmarked with tyres that have covered 20 miles or so are very cheap to buy at the moment.

The last set went for £435.00 and there are these listed below which are currently on ebay at under £200 as we speak. My point is (and it works in a similar way even if these aren't the right size for your wishes)that you can buy the full set and if you like the alloys keep them and sell you used ones, or conversely remove the tyres and replace on yours and sell a new set of alloys and trust me they will go a long way to paying for the tyres you've just put on. Did this with both my brothers and Fathers Land Rovers and they got new, very cheap tyres. Thumbs Up

Mr Fawlty, that is a most excellent observation, I seriously never thought of that, cap doffed! Only problem with long term ownership is a garage full of wheels and a nagging her indoors! Mr. Green

You are pretty sheltered in West Sussex I'd have thought, unless we get unusually bad weather so all season boots will probably suffice. I used to put on a full set of winters from November but now don't bother and have been fine, although I appreciate you never know for sure until you need them.

Personal tyre experience.
Pirelli (Scorpion or Verde) are excellent all round.
Continental. Slightly grippier and a tad quieter than Pirellis but with less life and poor edge wear.
Michelin. Long lasting, a bit noisy, slightly firmer in the corners (less sidewall roll over) than Pirelli or Continental. Expensive.
Nexen. Noisy, poor wet grip, definitely a step down from any of the above. I removed a pair of 5mm ones which came on the car and replaced with Continentals to match the rears.

Hope that helps a bit.

The scorps I'm having next week are 'new take offs'....I paid £420 for 4x 275/45/21 Scorps with no more than delivery miles on. Supplier will fit, balance and track for £80 so £500 all in... Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I have Vredestein Quatrac 3 tyres on the FF. They are rated as all season but have the mountain/snowflake symbol which is a requirement at certain times and in certain areas over here. I have had them on since last December and am very pleased with the handling, noise and wear.

I have Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme on the Disoc 2 and, as I don't do much mileage in it, have kept them on all year round. When they do need replacing I shall probably put Quatrac 3s on.

I did have Scorpion Verdes on which came with a set of wheels I bought and they were fine but I thought a little noisier than the Vredestein although, having said that, I find noise can be a pretty subjective thing. John

Brand new take offs are a cheaper option, but make sure that the speed rating is sufficient for your SC as most take offs are from oil burners & are W rated, which is lower than the SC's Y rating.
