We are looking after my daughters dog for two weeks in October, SWMBO said "I'll need a holiday after that" that is code for I'll need a week away somewhere in the UK (no flights or ferries) or else.

I had a quick look at Trip advisor for the top ten UK destinations and we either live near or have been to them all , except Bath. Thats a long way but not a problem but has anyone got any suggestions, SWMBO is not an outdoor girl (unless shopping) and we are members of the National Trust. Avid readers of this forum will know that we have to stay in Hotels or good B&Bs (think Hyacinth Bucket) - she's never crossed the threshold of my tent and getting a caravan or narrowboat has been vetoed (along with a motorbike) but I'm still hopeful for the future for one or both of the first two.  Geoff

There is always something interesting to see locally (or near enough) pretty much anywhere you stay in the UK which makes the place to stay more important in my view.... if the hotel is good, it can be holiday in itself but if the hotel is poor, it detracts enormously.

York or Edinburgh are two of my very fave places, you can easily spend a week in both exploring

+1 for Edinburgh. Used to live there, very compact city, and loads of stuff to see and do and eat and drink.

Bath is Nice too though. As you are a Trust member have you considered one of their cottage rentals on an estate somewhere? They have loads. Or as an alternative for something quirky, have a look at the landmark trust. They rent out lots of unusual buildings as self catering digs. Well where I live , north Cornwall , loads of trust places to visit , and now is the best time of year down ere , roads have gone quiet over the last week so it's just right ,

I've been to Cornwall several times and I was even born in Dorset, but its a hell of a drive from Lancashire but I intend going in the RR the train especially as it goes through London. I could however break the journey at Bath - keep 'em coming  Geoff

There was a thread on the forum about a driving trip around Scotland with incredible photos. It sounded great.

Bath is a very nice place to visit, we went for the day a few months ago. We had to park and ride to get into Bath. Got chatting to a local, he said it gets rammed with tourists, especially at weekends.
We were there mid week and it was ok
Had a pleasant boat trip on the river

These holiday threads are getting very popular. There is much to see UK wide. What do you like doing? Is this to be a countryside walking and wandering type break or a city shopping and wandering around shops with a decent pub at the end type break?

For a quiet and relaxed break that's probably not a million miles away try The Drunken Duck Inn, just outside of Ambleside; it's been a favourite of ours for years....well before kids, and we still call in for lunch if we're biking up that way. It's a perfect spot for the Lakes and has a huge variety of local beers and whisky plus very very good homemade food. Rooms are around £90 per night from memory. Trip advisor rating is mainly 5/5 and 4/5......100+ whiskies aren't for everyone tho !

If a city break, the obvious choices include Bath, York and Edinburgh - all of which have stuff to do and would also be in my top 5 in the UK. But why not try and find something you want to do or see....Theatre, event, attraction? and then book a hotel in the nearest city. London can be expensive but there is lots to see and do with a huge choice of hotels and B&B's etc  Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

It's gonna be Bath I think - The Drunken Duck is in walking distance from the families static caravan at Skelwith - small world and I've mountain biked there often, although it has changed considerable over the 40 odd years I've been going there.. She does actually like Ambleside shops and the big garden centre as well as the coffee/cake shop at Skelwith Bridge, but she doesn't cycle and I'm certain I won't be walking up Jenkins Crag with her.

Bath is looking favourite because she's never been there and it has shops, so far been to all the others mentioned - at least once, twice or more in some cases!! Geoff

when in Bath, you might want to visit the spa baths..my wife and friends have been there and enjoyed the visit.. ... - .- -.

Edinburgh is nice to visit but it's THE most car unfriendly city I know  Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

loads of choice on places to stay in and around bath, but if you prefer a smaller town as a base then Cirencester is very pretty and good to have a potter around and there is a very nice Waitrose.... and is only about 30 mins from bath in the car. We have based ourselves there several times for explorations of the local environs from the cotswold areas right down to bristol.

If you want to be in the centre of Bath there is plenty of hotels to pick from, not my bag though, hotels for me stop at the Premier Inn as i can never see the point in spending more. the fun is in the going out from the hotel and finding the restaurants and bars to play in, not sitting in and eating the generally mediocre food. :thumbs:

as a member of the NT the 2 local properties to see are Lacock Abbey and Dyrham park. Lacock is worth a visit, if only because it is where a fair amount of the Harry Potter films were set, Nice grounds too though and last time we went there was a food festival on, which tbh was quite small but i have vivid memories of the Hog roast  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
