I'd be looking at the Verde 255/55/20's - there seems to be loads of them around and much cheaper than the 50 profiles.

Scorpions every time for me. Had them on the FFRR and the previous Sports. Always last around 30k miles and not noisy. Might be pricey, but with that durability I'm only buyng them every 3 years!

Would dedicated road tyres do, or do they needs to be M+S?

As I'd be happy with an all seasons tyre I'm not actually sure if that means I'd be best with M + S tyres (meaning they should be fine for snow?)... Does that mean if not M + S they would be rubbish in snow?

Noted Stan... I was probably thinking Conti or Michelin and the like... But... I believe you can buy Uniroyal Rainsport tyres for 4 X 4s and having had them on two different type cars before, dare I suggest that for a 'mid range' tyre, they were superb... and I'd be tempted if they were compatible with the RR...

An M+S tyre is built with wide sipes to allow a reasonable amount of self cleaning for both mud and snow. It's a fair all year round fitment for a Land Rover if it's going to see some light off road work and very limited snow and you really don't want to be bothering with wheel and tyre changes. It's what LR fit as standard.

An All Season tyre is a reasonable compromise between a summer and winter tyre that will have a very limited ability to clean snow from its sipes, but has an intermediate compound that's okay in the summer, spring and autumn, but marginal for winter use; they don't perform anything like as well as a true winter tyre. The difference is quite shocking - check this out:

If it's a M+S tyre you want, then the Pirelli Scorpion Zeros work very well in that size. If you want serious winter grip - get dedicated winter tyres and swap the wheel over twice a year.

That is what i mean - snow tyres are mandatory in wintertime in the fatherland - you will get fined and you lose your insurance cover if you don't have them ..... Rolling Eyes All my spelling errorz are belong to me!

It's a very safe idea; how it would work in practice here where every car owner has to find space for a spare set of wheels all year, I'm not sure Confused

How does it work out in Germany?

My LR/Jaguar dealer stocks them for an extra - both cars the RR and the Jag. It is like like 70 pounds per car twice a year - i do not really care, cause my cars and all the services, gasoline etc. are tax deductible from my income tax (i pay like 42%). Cool All my spelling errorz are belong to me!

It's a whole business in Deutschland where companies will store a full set of wheels & tyres for you. A good friend of mine in Hamburg uses such a facility which comes with 2 changes per year for a fixed monthly charge. Al lot also seem to use steel wheels for winters to save the winter damage to their alloys.

As for tyres, Having used Continentals, Pirellis, Michelins and Nexens they are all very different.
Conti - far and away the most comfortable and the quietest. Prone to shoulder edge wear. 20k miles from a set.
Pirellis. The best all-rounder. Even wear, supreme grip and 30k miles ish from a set. Probably the best value overall. The newer Scorpion Verde is what I have on the L405 and they are very good indeed.
Michelin. The Diamaris (Summer) are extremely long lived, grip well and cost a small fortune. Their winters (Alpins) I tried on a different car. Phenomenal grip, good wear but noisy. STay away from teh Cross-Climate; one look at the tread pattern ought to give you an idea of noise levels, you'll end up deaf.
Nexen. Some report these as being OK. I found them anything but OK. Hated them. Poor grip, poor life, noisy and all the feel of the cheapest budget tyres.

I've personally never tried Vredestein but plenty of friends in the D3 club have them and really rate them in winter. But if I was going to run 2 sets of wheels I would probably go with Michelin Alpins for Winter and Pirelli Scorpion Verde for the rest of the year.

Compelling argument for Conti there Dom...

Our currents are Pirelli and I'd say the outer shoulders are wearing now...

Thumbs Up

Never really had a problem on Scorpion Zeros is this country, but I do have a set of winter for ski trips on my 19", which are scorpion winters. These are very quiet, but don't know what the wear would be like running them all year, as we only use them a few thousand miles a year.

The old car had Mich Diamaris on and they were very durable but definitely a road tyre rather than a m + s even though they are stamped m and s, but nice and quiet if expensive.

Personally i don't think you will go far wrong with zeros for most conditions, and a set of chains for really really really snowy conditions. I know the arguments about compounds etc for winter tyres but tbh I have never noticed much of a difference in performance for the scorps when it gets cold in the UK.

Vredstein wintrac 4 are well recommended by many, and they do the 255/50/20 size and if you look on the D4 site quite a few on there do run them all year round, not sure on the wear though when used all year round. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
