Add blue

On Saturday the dash lit up with a warning to Fill the exhaust additive.
As I had a reasonably long journey on Sunday and having stopped panicking, I went in to the service menu where it said 1420 miles to exhaust additive empty and 1700 miles to next service.
I have booked the car in for a service early in November which will be before either of those milages but also got a bottle of the pig we for 7 quid just to make the light go out. Wrong. is there any way of stopping it telling me each time I start up that it is low on exhaust fluid. letters not necessarily in the right order

Beware, if it's anything like my Disco, the count down is very optimistic. Mine uses it nearly twice as quickly as the computer is estimating.

Meanwhile 10 litres of AdBlue can be bought at Morrisons for only £11.00 so put a third of that in and the lamp will go out for sure!

My understanding is that no engine damage will be done and that the engine will simply refuse to start the next time it stops.

The good news is that, Adblue is cheap, readily available and a doddle to refill Thumbs Up

Adblu, is added into the exhaust system and has nothing to do with engine, engine performance or engine reliability.
It does however have a signal to the ecu to shut down the starting procedure after several warnings.
If you disobey this warning it can be expensive.

I know this as the loan car I had when mine went in for service did just that.
And it had only done 6000 miles!

My understanding is that it won't start, not as any damage will be done to the vehicle but that a car designed to use the stuff will no longer be able to comply with its emissions certification without it

So they have to shut it down.

Car is at the stealers at the moment.
Yesterday I stopped the car on the drive, got out and moved something, got back in and it refused to start. Phoned LR Assist who sent out an AA man. Car started on second attempt for him but lit the engine management lamp. Plugged it in to OBDII, cleared the light but showed 2 other unspecified faults. Car would then start, drive and stop all OK. He wanted to charge me £40 for a gallon of add blue, when I declined he advised I take it straight to the dealer and wished me a good day. Drove it OK 20 miles to the stealer this morning all ok. Car says 600+ miles to exhaust fluid empty, 1200 miles to service, car is booked in for Nov 2nd for fixed price service.
Stealer service girl (yes derogatory term) says if it is just add blue needed today we have to pay £30.
In the scheme of things £30 is neither here nor there, but a car that shuts down for no controllable reason by the driver is far from acceptable, if it was likely to happen then they should have advised me 10 days ago when I was in the showroom paying them £7.73 for a half gallon top up bottle.

And breath. letters not necessarily in the right order

My understanding is that in order for the vehicle to be EU6 complaint it must have and use adblue, if the system says it cannot meet type approval then technical it shouldn't it be on the road.

Hence the shutdown....

That said, if it needed more than half a litre or whatever then that's what should have been put in, unless the system has in of itself got a fault.

I can see that situation is going to happen time and again ...... Sad

Petrol! It's the future Wink
