2010 - > deployable steps fitting.

Ok so the steps have sat in the garage for a couple of weeks and today was sunny but cold so ideal swearing weather..

First couple of points

its not too hard to do if you are methodical
it took me 4 hours including 1/2 hour for breakfast and 30 mins to go to B and Q for a tap and die set.
no particularly special tools required
if you have a cream interior keep a damp cloth to hand to wipe you hands and clean any dirty marks.


The step kit comes in 3 parts.

Module
Harness
Steps

And the instructions are pretty comprehensive but some photos might help so here goes. There is the instructions in the WIKI, but these are for the autobiog black edition, the connectors indicated in these instructions aren't present on lesser models but the instructions provided in the kit show what to do.

The first job is to move the seats back and open the glove box. (Can't do this once you have disconnected the battery)
Next is open bonnet and remove both positive and negative terminals (neg first)

The following steps are basically trim removal, it feels scary but I only managed to break one clip and I had a spare so all good.

The drivers dash end needs to come off first.



Then the cill trim and bonnet opener surround. The aluminium trim pops off with a trim remover and the bonnet surround slides off towards the rear of the car. No drama in removing either of these.







Next off is the drivers side centre console side trim. This is held on with a t20 screw and 2 trim clips at the front edge. Gentle pull at the bottom edge once the screw is removed will have it off.




Then the drivers side under dash panel is removed. 4 t20 screws hold it on. And a funny large plastic screw at the back.There is wiring to the footwell light and the Obd socket to remove.







The next off is the A pillar trim. 1 t27 screw and 2 clips hold this in position. The screw is under the plastic airbag cover/trim piece.





That's it for the driver side trim.

Next up is removal of the roof console. This is held in with 2 8mm socket headed screws. These are hidden behind the sunglasses holder. There are then some clips round the edge which need easing out.





The instructions indicate that the dash end vent on the driver side needs to come out along with the wood trim. It doesn't. There is enough access without.

Similar trim removal on the passenger side, though the A pillar trim and the dash end don't need to come off. Is shows the glove box coming out. Again this is not needed. It needs to be dropped down but this can be achieved by releasing the support on the right hand side of the lid.

The wiring is pretty straight forwards to be honest. It's mostly about routing the cable correctly which is trial and error and difficult to explain, but obvious from the drawings and being able to see it.

There are a couple of main points

THe main power is drawn from the big blue plug on the fuse board. You remove this, release the red grid on the bottom by gently prising it out a couple of mm, the large red cable on the loom is inserted into the hole shown below, the red grid pushed back, and the big blue plug put back.





The next stage is removing the large plug from the module which is under and behind the fuse board. Again this can be done in situ. The plug which was in the module is connected to a dedicated connector in the loom and a corresponding connector goes back into the module.


That is the trickiest bit of the wiring done.

The next job is to route the long part of the loom and the 2 module connectors round to the drivers foot well. There is a big enough gap again pretty easy.

The log thin part of the loom then gets fed across the bottom of the dash and up the A pillar, across the front of the headlining and over to the roof console hole.





There are diagrams on what to do here in the instructions. You fit the switch (easy) swap a wire out of one of the plugs, and replace it with part of the loom. The plug is quite delicate and you have to be careful when opening it. Once open there is a barb on the wire you are removing which needs pressing down with a screwdriver to enable the wire to pull out freely, there are 2 stops it needs pressing at!

The rest of the console wiring is as per the instruction book and plug and play.

Once done the roof console can be refitted. So can the A pillar trim, pay attention to the bottom of the trim it has to sit correctly against the dash end to line up properly with the screw.

Wire the black wire with the ring end to the earth post by the passenger door and tighten down. There should be a plastic cover over the earth terminal. Save this and make sure to refit.





The module can be fitted as shown in the instructions. No extra info needed here.

The Harnesses to the step units poke through 2 pre made holes with grommets these go in quite easily, bit of a wiggle and a pull from inside gets them seated right! Run the drivers side harness behind the dash to the passenger footwell.

The drivers trim can now be refitted.

Connect the 2 step harnesses into the main harness, the drivers side has blue tape on the loom part to differentiate it! The cables can be tidied now and clipped if needed.

Re assemble the passenger side trim....

That completes the wiring Very Happy

Place the steps in position on the floor and connect them to the loom. Then reconnect the battery and follow the instructions to extend the brackets for hanging.

Disconnect the steps from the loom.

Right this is where you can either make the job easy or swear at it for a couple of hours like I did. The captive nuts will have rusted and getting a start on the bolt is pretty much impossible.

GET A TAP AND DIE SET! (ฃ10 b and q)

As a starter for 10 tap out the m8 holes for the 13mm headed bolts

On the passenger side tap out all the M6 holes on the cill.

On the drivers side there is the air tank which makes it alkward. There is already a set of bolts in the rearmost cill holes. Take these out and use them in the front set of holes. Then thread the new bolts into the rear holes which are nice and clean as they had bolts in them. The pre fitted bolts have a starter thread on them and they were shorter so didn't have to go in as far so worked well in the front holes.

Apart from these tips it's pretty much as per the diagrams. I managed it on my own but a helping hand will be good! A 10mm ratchet spanner is very handy for tightening up. It's fiddly but doable!

Connect the loom to the steps and bobs you mother brother... a working set of steps. My ignition cycled a couple of times and didn't start when I first tried to fire it up. But on the 4th attempt all was good.

Not tried yet but there is a supplied alan key for some purpose or other, i presume it is to move the steps out of the way so you can jack them up.

Looking in the handbook, there are 4 allen bolts each side which hold the step to the bracket. Basically you have to take the step board off to get to the jacking points.

personally I reckon that you wouldnt struggle too much with them fitted if you had a bottle jack, or you could just jack on the suspension mounts. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

For reference, the steps come off easily with the Allen key, there are 4 bolts on each step take these off and the step lifts off. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

As pointed out to me, there is a connector on the 2012 loom which doesn't show on some sets of instructions (2 small white plugs with yellowish wires) these link into the cars loom, it is detailed in the LR fitting instructions in the wiki for the AB, step 10. They auto deploy when you open the door, and can be locked out with the extra button. Thumbs Up

Found that as well Stan, I think the little alloy blocks the bolts go into on the step move about a bit so don't always line up with the bolt on first attempt, I used the Allen key in the hole to line them up. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ
