viscous fan

Hello All,
Anyone know what size the nut is to unscrew the fan? (Have a 2004 TD6 FFRR with fan running all the time resulting in cool engine but wot's worst - less MPG - errgg!!)

The Disco 2 was 36mm if I remember right but never tried it on the TD6.

Halfords sell 32mm I think not sure, so just off in a minute to find out.

Also, any idea wot the part number is of the fan? Plus, is it clockwise to undo or anticlockwise? Sorry for bombarding!!!
.
Cheers

Definitely a left hand thread, as regards size, think its a 36mm, but don't hold me to it.
Greg. Thumbs Up
part no of fan, you should be able to get from one of the sites like island 4x4 or advanced factors.

Thanks there. Should be Cardiff this year but haven't put a bet on.

Haven't been to Halfords yet as still looking for the house keys!

Cheers.

I bought the 'special' tool for locking the water pump but it's very awkward to position and hold while trying to undo the fan nut. I took the advice of some very experienced people on this forum who said to put the spanner on the fan nut then hit it sharply, not hard, with a soft mallet in the direction it's meant to go and the shock loosens the nut.

I did and it came off no problem.

Best of luck... ______________________________

Two Halfords fan spanners will do the job, but fiddly as they are not long enough. I bought a massive combination spanner from the same, but only just long enough to give it a whack!

You might also consider leaving the fan off altogether, works very well for me and others. I have even dispensed with the fan cowl as well, with no ill effect, and great for accessing items at the front of the engine. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Hello All,
Happy New Year!

Thanks for the replies. However, anyone can help removing the fan cowling?

I have pulled out the two plugs at the top. Now looking to remove the two electrical sockets seen as you look on the left but it also sees to be held both sides further down which I can't see.

Thanks there.

May well run it without the fan if I get it off especially if it saves money and not planning to go to the Gobi desert this week!

Though will it cause any probs say as in a traffic queue or anything?
Regards.
