I'm thinking about doing a similar repair, except using bunjee or shock cord. I'll loop one end around and under the top bolt head, fixing the flap hinge to the body, and will feed the cord through the cap hole and tie a knot at the other end.

Anyone done this repair using cord? ______________________________

I bought some rubber o ring material off eBay , if you slide one end into the notched cut out it holds really well and the end that fits into the cap I heated up with a lighter and pushed it into the cap so it splays out inside and then can't come back out. I can look up what I used

I bought a 1 metre length of 5 mm, it is material that is designed for making your own O ring and gluing together

I'll take a photo of mine later when i am not being used as Dad's taxi service

Pic attached below, it is a bit dark and rainy here.
The rubber looks like it might be starting to crack but it is still holding fine and at £3 for a metre and 2 minutes to fit it might be a solution for somebody Smile

Hello,

material is some kind of silicon rubber , very tough and free. Very Happy

In my mod the drive belt eventually perishes with the petrol fumes, might be OK on a diesel - don't know. So I now use a part of a lanyard that half the working population seem to have round their neck with passes or some such dangling on the end. Its cloth - so far so good.

I've still never actually dropped the filler cap and I'm at the pump at least once a week, its obviously waiting for the day when I don't have a retainer on it Rolling with laughter Geoff

Stupid question of the day: Does the old retainer just pull out of the top of the filler cap? I don't want to leave anything stuck inside. 2012 5.0L S/C

The plastic cover of the fuel cap pops off. Under the top is a spring. Under that is the strap. I pushed it out using a screw driver. ______________________________

I did a few months ago when I fixed mine. Then I saw the price and fixed it with a short piece of heatshrink tubing instead. £15? They're having a laugh! 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate
