BMW V8 alternator swap

Hi all I'm new here so this topic may have already been posted.
How involved is swapping the water cooled alternator. I'm quite handy so not afraid to tackle it.
Thanks
Dan

Not that difficult. It's underneath the r/h cylinder head when looking at the engine from the front.

They are water cooled so encased in a housing that is accessed from the front. Usual pipes to remove, plus viscous fan, maybe radiator (which is quite easy) and belts/tensioners. Then you're just about there. 6 bolts and it comes out. Current:
- 2013 L405 4.4 TDV8 Vogue
Sold:
- 2004 L322 4.4 Vogue (BRC LPG)
- 2002 L322 4.4 HSE (having fixed timing chain guides)
- 2000 P38 4.6 Vogue (BRC LPG)
- 1981 2-door In-Vogue
- 1980 Ex-Army SIII LWB
- 1976 SIII LWB
- 1968 SIIA
Stripped for parts:
- 2003 L322 4.4 Vogue

Thanks Zebedee. I've started today. However got stuck at the viscous fan removal. I've ordered a tool for it. Is it worth buying a quality alternator, seeing as it's a Censored to get at ?
Cheers
Dan

In other words, under the left hand cylinder head. ** Twisted Evil

Mark a spot on the bolt positions, as it's easy to bolt it in wrong. Also, take care to add some RTV, on the o ring, as it often leaks. Don't strip a thread, whole lower timing case will be required if you do. It's heavy, don't bash your rad. The fan nut get hit to the right, catch it with a thick gloved hand, so it also doesn't ruin your rad.. it can be fiddly trying to screw the fan back on. Take your time.

It's quite easy , when you have the viscous fan holding tool and spanner ..

Fit a new O ring to the alternator
Buy the best you can afford
Drain the coolant out the rad first
Make sure you bleed it well with the front raised I found best
As already said put it back in the same orientation or your lead won't reach.

@Dd5884,

Think mine may be starting to play up - Which brand alternator did you buy? Cost? How long to remove and refit?

Thx
DB
