The love affair is starting to die....

FFR been stuck on a ramp for several days now following a smoke test which indicated a massive air leak from some where around the front of the inlet manifold. No, not the throttle body seal or the inlet manifold gaskets as we discovered after removing the whole inlet manifold ( a pig of a job- don't let any crappy 5 minute youtube video tell you otherwise ).

Nope, once a trillion nuts and bolts had been removed and the inlet manifold lifted off, there, staring us in the face, where the remains of two rubber pipes. A large 4 inch long pipe that used to be connected to the bottom of the cyclone oil separator and and along thinner rubber pipe that had once been connected to the pcv and well out of view.

Both where in tatters and I can't even guess how long they had been like that. By the way, the two crankcase breather pipes on the top of the manifold, famed for going soft and collapsing on themselves where in a pretty poor state which was more than annoying seeing as how they had only lasted 20,000 or just over 14 months. An email to Britparts when I get five minutes.

So, the pcv has been replaced along with all the pathetic, easily destroyed star bolts, four rubber pipes, the inlet manifold gaskets and the throttle body gasket.

The secondary air injection pipe in front of the water pump would also appear to be leaking as we had to remove it the other week to replace the water pump. That will come off tomorrow to check the o rings that where on each end of the pipe.

Oh well at least you got it sorted, don't know about L322 parts but Britparts have always been known as 5hitparts in other Land Rover circles, their own make parts are built to a very low price, hence a very low quality...

Fine for genuine bits though Pete

Hey Dave,

I replaced the hoses along with the PCV valve just less than a week ago as well. Agreeably it was hell on earth. Did you tackle the oil separator from underneath the rangie or from above. I have still yet to replace that 4 inch pipe along with the oil separator so that is why I ask.

Before the PCV valve and breather hose replacement, the RR was leaving clouds of smoke while driving, it would fill up the garage with smoke in a matter of seconds, however after the replacement of only the breather hoses and the PCV valve, I'm pleased to say that now only a quarter of the garage fills up with smoke and the drivers behind me can actually see the Land Rover badge. I think after replacing the oil separator along with that 4 inch pipe which is impossible to reach, the Rangie should go back to normal, and perhaps I will continue my love affair, and I suggest the same to you ahaha.

We had the whole manifold complete with pcv and oil separator off in one piece so we stuck the pipes on then and with three pairs of hands and a ramp, managed to feed the pipes back to the metal pipes.Who do we blame for this shambolic set up...Land Rover or BMW ?

To true !
Got the SAI pipe off today and replaced the seals on it. Also got the bracket on one end rewelded back on by a specialist firm round the corner who can weld aluminium . The nasty noise on start up from cold has now disappeared !.
Smoke tested every thing again and no leaks showing so fingers crossed . Will have to run on petrol for a bit ( it's lpg ) to let the ecu re learn the various fuel trim levels.
Car feels a lot friskier than before and hopefully the fuel gulping days have gone.

Well after all of the above, still have a mis fire from cold start ! Cylinders 1,3 and 4 show up on the code reader, along with lambda sensor before cat one ( which is only 3 months old ). Left the battery off for half an hour this morning then did a 30 mile petrol run. Was Ok when I re started 3 hours later so let in switch to gas where it was also ok and did 25 miles on lpg.

Will have to see what happens in the morning now.

Any one want to throw any suggestions in to the hat ?

Did you ever manage to replace the small pipe at the bottom of the oil separator. If you did, how ? It looks like a swine !

I don't know if it's the correct way but when I did mine I attached the small pipe to the bottom of the separator, had the small jubilee clip over the metal pipe down below, fed the 4 inch pipe through the unseeable gap and over the metal pipe down below and slid the jubilee up onto the 4 inch pipe as I did so.
Oh, and I had the offending 4 inch pipe in hot water for a few minutes before I started.

I now consider myself an expert when it comes to heating up a rubber pipe, launching myself onto the top of a petrol V8 and fiddling with invisible pipe work before it all cools down. But I never, ever intend to do that job again. The amount of time it took almost resulted in divorce.

Thanks Chris
It's good to know it IS doable. I haven't yet got the broken pipe off the steel pipe. I started by pointing a light and mirror at the blighter but it got too cold and the Missus came out and said my roast chicken dinner was ready. I will carry on tomorrow

Cheers

Dan Thumbs Up

When I did my oil separator I also attached the 4 inch pipe to the separator first then fed it down over the metal pipe. I found that putting a bit of silicon grease onto the metal pipe first aided installation greatly and to be honest forgot to put the jubilee clip onto the metal pipe first so had to take the small pipe off. Then after putting the small pipe back on realised that I had put the wrong size jubilee clip on, then after putting the small pipe back on realised I had put the jubilee clip the wrong way round (it has to be a certain way to allow access to the screw head with a small screwdriver), so off again. Long story short I was panicking about the short pipe before I started the job but after putting it on and taking it off about 4 times I finally realised it's not such a bad job as it got much easier the more I did it.

The only problem was the lying on top of the engine, I would recommend something really padded as you are going to be there a while Thumbs Up

Good luck ______________________________
