External Hard Drives For Media??

Looking online it appears the MY17 (may also apply to previous MY's) has 2 x USB ports so i'm thinking use one for the iPhone & the other for a Portable Hard Drive which could hold my entire iTunes Music/Video & Music Video Library, which is around 250GB.

My first question being is my thinking correct that the car has 2 USB ports & that one can be for the iPhone cable & the other an external hard drive?

If this is the case, what capacity & type of external hard drive can be used/is best? Ideally an SSD makes sense due to it's read speed etc. but would this work?

My original intention was iPhone USB cable in one port & a 64GB stick in the other, but an external SSD drive would make more sense as can hold everything. An alternative if an external drive won't work as some do require power & not all USB ports provide enough to power an external drive is to get a 256GB USB stick which would do the same, but again can the FFRR manage such a size of stick?

Thanks in advance.

What formats will it play ?

All my music is in an Apple format in iTunes & my car won't play those unless I convert to MP3

I just bought an old 160Gb iPod and have that in the car.

How much music do you want to store?

256gb will give you @ 35,000 tracks in mp3 format @ 192 bitrate, that's 2000 hours listening time or @ 3000 albums

I reckon a 64gb stick (or SD card with usb convertor) would be more than sufficient Wink .

It's a mix of m4a, mp3, m4v & mp4. Virtually all of my music is dowloaded or ripped at 360kbps & most movies are in HD. I also have a large PLEX Media Server with several hundred HD films which i could select from & have these in the car from time to time.

The reason for wanting it all is there's a large number of movies & music videos which i assume the FFRR can play & alongside that it seams pointless having say 1/3rd of my music/video collection in the car as i'd have to pick/choose when i can have it all in there if it's possible.

To be honest most of my listening will be Spotify, but for the cost of a medium capacity SSD which i could likely acquire through the business at trade money & they're getting fairly cheap nowadays.

This is hardly a big concern & is probably driven by my excitement that the car will be with me in 10 days, but i was having a sort out of my media folders & this idea popped into my head.

We're upgrading from a 16 car to a 17 due to arrive early March and so I've been doing similar digging.

As far as audio is copncerned this is from the RR owners manual secrtion of the LR website ref audio:

The media system plays MP3, WMA, WAV, AIFF, M4A, FLAC, AAC, AMR, LPCM, and ALAC files.

Good new given that my music library is riped in ALAc and MP3, obvioulsy I'd prefer to use ALAC so this bodes well.

Ref video the manual says the following:

The system plays MPEG1, MPEG2, WMV9, VC-1, H.264, H.263, MPEG4 ASP, RAW, VP6, and VP8 files

Like you I'm a big fan of Plex and have everything ripped twice over, once in MKV and then further compressed into H264 Apple friendly M4V. My hunch is these latter files will work but will probably need the extension changed to .mp4.

The split screen on the FFRR is a great invention meaning your front passeneger can happily watch a film whilst you're driving and have music on.

As regards an HDD for extra capacity my guess is that given that the MY17 uses the newer USB3/higher output standard sockets then this will work. If ours turns up first I'll let try it out and let you know.

Thanks. I've ordered an Amazon Kodi HD Firestick so will see how i get on with that. Quite excited as i can of course use that in the house too so will see what that offers.

Also ordered a ruggedised 256GB SSD drive so will copy across my entire iTunes library including films etc. & see what that offers up. May not work as expected but was reduced so could be used elsewhere if not compatible with the car.

If you are plugging in a hard drive, I would say an ssd is s must. You don't need the speed at all, but the cars movement and vibration would be very hard on a regular (spinning) hd. An ssd might be an attractive thing to nick if left in the car. I think a USB stick would do everything you need. They come in some pretty big sizes.

What format should i use for the new SSD Hard Drive, as on Windows 10 it offers up NTFS or exFat with NTFS being the default (strange)?

As i'm finding to my frustration trying to connect a USB stick & copy to the Media Library, the USB slots don't like exFat & much prefer Fat32 as exFat isn't readable (no idea why).

The problem is that within Windows 10, i'm not given the option to format the SSD Drive to Fat32, only exFat & NTFS, for the USB Stick i DO get the option of Fat32.

This is all starting to drive me insane (see my USB Drive issues thread below). Paul

Can SSD's be formatted to Fat32?

Seems odd that Windows 10 being the most up to date Windows version will happily format a USB stick to Fat32, but won't offer it for this 256gb SSD drive. Paul
