L322 4.4 TDV8 burnt oil smell in cabin and outside

Help!

Noticed a small patch of oil under the engine after my car had been sitting for a few days and now notice a slight burning oil smell in the cabin after about 20 minutes driving.

Also can smell the same smell when I get out of the car.

Haven't had chance to check under the bonnet as its dark when I leave and dark when I return.

Any known issues that worth checking this weekend? CURRENT : FFRR 2012 4.4 TDV8

Small oil feed pipe going into the EGR cooler that splits the oil o ring seal... Look at the top rear of the engine... If you can get it in the air you will see two streams of oil either side of the gearbox...

Find these a lot sir...

Finally got the car back from the independent garage and apparently they changed the oil cooler and a pipe - my question is can they do this without having to change the oil?

The oil level is exactly as it went into the garage (about 1/2 full) ?

Wonder if I've been had? CURRENT : FFRR 2012 4.4 TDV8

Wow... So the pipe with the “O” ring was not at fault? Or the pipe with the “O” ring was what was changed along with the cooler etc

Craig - I'm in he dark about what has been changed - I was told a new oil cooler and pipe (apparently £600 cost?) but I'm still baffled as they left the car low on oil - I would have though they would have needed to drain the oil first and hence filled with oil again? CURRENT : FFRR 2012 4.4 TDV8

Well, its on top of the engine so the job could be done without draining the oil BUT... I wouldn’t have let the car go out without an oil change if only to make sure anything that could have contaminated the oil whilst changing the cooler was removed... Bow down

Will have to get the camera out on mine again as there was a very distinct hot burning smell when I just got out!

Funny as it was fine a couple of weeks back when I last checked it! So what else could it be folks, brakes feel Ok heat wise, it's the first time it's been run for more than 10 miles since its service though but I doubt they chucked a loss of oil everywhere..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ah yes, the oil cooler in the V.... £1097 later mine was fixed. Garage just bought another 4.4 with the same issue. I think the oil cooler is about £380 plus vat from Land Rover, then the labour and oil change and coolant flushes as oil was in my coolant....

Seems a common issue then.... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Smell has gone Thumbs Up not sure it was my car! Was parked in a car park.

Repeated my run backwards and it was as sweet as a nut, with no smell under the bonnet when I got home! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hello - I have just registered on the forum after being led here by Google search "L322 Oil Cooler Problems"
Yeah, has all the issues mentioned so far.... drips on floor and then, weeks after a huge service, an acrid smell when sitting in traffic - initial diagnosis was the new rear hubs/disks/pads (it failed its MOT on the handbrake...) but smell persisted. Car been with local dealer for a few days whilst i was away, come back to be told new oil cooler, connecting pipes and now the coolant has been conatminated so that means a full flush and refresh. On the one hand, the dealer is thorough, on the other hand a £2k service has quickly been followed by another £1k+ bill. No-one said these were cheap to run and maintain, but.....

As for the comment about oil levels, yes I was advised that the oil would not need replacing (just been done as part of the service) but it is recommended.

Bit of a pain really, had a few 300-model Disco's years ago and this is by far up there with the best cars I have run/owned, but jeez, the bills Confused

BTW I run a '61 plate TDV8 'Biography Ipanema Sand/Chocolate

Sorry forgot to add that I have instructed the dealer to lodge a claim with LR UK for a contribution....will let you know if that succeeds!

17Feb: JLR rejected claim via dealer. £1400 this time! Have written to JLR customer services. Oh, and now the o/s deployable step has snapped a bracket.

hmmm mine's back in to JLR main dealer when they discovered an oil leak during service (but didn't rectify it) - shall be an interesting discussion about warranty and main dealer quality I suspect Sad

JLR came up with a contribution as a goodwill gesture....
