Embedded SIM Problem?

All was going well with the new car's first proper outing yesterday morning until half way into my journey when the map display changed & features stopped working (Traffic etc.).

Took me a few mins to spot that the 3G symbol had vanished. Stopped for fuel a little later & removed the Sim, cleaned it & re-inserted but it won't come back. Then thought it maybe needed a reset so when I stopped at my final destination, switched the car off for a while & then returned but still nothing. Car was left overnight but again no 3G this morning.

Checked on the My3 website that the Sim hadn't been deactivated but all appears normal so I'm stumped as to what can have happened & frustrated that the Sim actually offers up more features than I thought so now they're unavailable it's annoying.

Any ideas or anyone else had this happen. Going to request another Sim from 3 in case it for some reason just went faulty mid journey.

Is it possible you've used up your monthly data allowance? I know you said you had checked the Three website for the SIM status and probably checked then, but nonetheless thought I'd ask.

Try going into the mobile settings on the cars info screen. Noticed mine turned the mobile data off for no apparent reason. Turned it back on and its been fine since then.

I have a 12Gb 12 month 3 SIM in my iPad - it stopped after a month - I tried turning stuff off & back on with no luck.

I went back to the 3 store who looked everything up & spoke to a support team, they told me to try wifi off & back on - and voila. They claimed they hadn't done anything else, but I'm not entirely convinced.....

Sorted.

Hadn't realised a Mobile Data settings section existed so once found i just switched it off & back on. No idea why it wasn't working as everything appeared ok under the Settings but a switch off & back on fixed it.

Also noticed Wifi in there but unsure what that would do as it was as well as Hotspot so appeared to be an ability to connect the car to any available wifi hotspots which i can't work out why that wold be needed.

Hotspot allows others in the vehicle to connect their iPad's, laptop's etc to the cars 3g and get internet connection.

Connect to wifi allows the car to connect to available wifi networks e.g. at home. Saves using data from the SIM

Thanks. I had kind of assumed that but am at a loss why you'd park your car close enough to a wifi hotspot just to get free data? Why would you be using the cars data at home?

Just strikes me as odd as i can't see any need for the car to be connected to an external wifi source.

Probably for those who don't have a SIM inserted. Whilst connected to a wifi network a route can be planned, POI searched for, traffic & weather info downloaded (although won't update once enroute), and satellite images downloaded.

I presume thats the reason although there may be a other reasons.

Now the SIM card has stopped working again. Tried the same I did yesterday by switching mobile data off & back on but it just says reading SIM with the flashing dots in the top right corner & then displays what looks like a capital G with a line through it.

I got 3 to send out a replacement SIM card yesterday, so hoping for some reason they've killed the old one in readiness for the replacement, however they never mentioned that would happen.

Great, 3 sent out the new SIM & sent the wrong size & it isn't one you can cut down so being a full sized one i'm no further forward.

That said, they did confirm that as they ordered a new SIM, this killed the old one automatically, so when the new one arrives & assuming it's now the correct size i should be back in the game. Paul
