FBH Pre-Wiring?

Is there wiring already in place for a FBH in the Petrol L322s?

I'm not feeling adventurous enough to pull the wheel arch liner off and have a look just yet. I wondered if anyone knew if the cables are there.

I'm also aware that I'd need a different heater changeover valve, dosing pump and to have the car coded to recognise it... But nothing is impossible and with the price of petrol FBHs very reasonable at the moment I feel it has to be done.

Im with you on this one Dan. I have a diesel one in my shed I was going to graft in along with a small diesel tank. Just need to sort all the other niggles first No7 - 2003 V8 Vogue

I looked at that option but really wasn't keen on having to carry round diesel too. I had written off the idea of adding a FBH to petrol due to the coding of the car to accept it, but now I've got my head round that it's all good.

Just need to know whether the wiring is there then I'll detail the install...

The TD4 Freelander I have actually warms up faster than the L322 now I've fixed its FBH.

The Thermotop heaters burn 1 gallon for every 10 hours use. I'd spend more than a gallon of petrol driving to an agricultural supplier to find some red Laughing

yes wiing and plugs for the FBH are standard in all cars
under the wheel arch and in the boot

i have a DERV FBH fitted onto my petrol car, they run just the sameon petrol or derv (so dont go out and buy a very rare and expensive petrol heater)

also the fuel line take off in the petrol pump housing is presant on all cars Thumbs Up

Just to confirm are you saying you use a diesel FBH but are running it on petrol? Do it work correctly as they are labelled up differently for the 2 fuels. Would be interested to know how it performs running on the wrong fuel.

yes you are correct

when I first fitted it I had a spare tank under the passenger sill and it ran on DERV
this was smelly Smokey and horrible when it first fired up and shut down(it ran for 30 mins as sweet as a nut)
it also clogged up with coke after a while as it only ran for 30 mins and these heaters are designed to run for hours on end.

the same set up still performs the same now I have swapped the fuel for petrol but without the smell smoke and fumes

I believe its just the flow rate of the pump that is different between the fuel types and that is managed in the PCB board in the unit it self

this is very interesting, did you change any settings on the unit in order to get it to run on petrol or did you simply plumb into the petrol fuel line and fire it up?

Contemplating ordering one to have a go, could you take some pictures of yours in your car so i can understand its location and all the parts that i would need to get hold of to fit it in mine. e.g. pipes, heater valves, pumps etc...

Before I fitted mine to my old disco bus, I bench run mine in the shed with a gorilla tub acting as the cooling system. Things I discovered - there are only a few units that can be run without a can signal to activate, so if you planning on bench testing be aware. I made the mistake of buying one of the can units and ended up changing the board from a guy in Poland who builds his own controllers about £90 I think. The fuel feed pipe has to be the. Correct size otherwith the metering of the fuel delivery will be wrong. The burners a very simple to re build and clean out. After I de- coked mine it ran really cean with only a puff of smoke on shut down. The right units have a built on water circulation pump.I've got a rack of PDFs detailing wiring schematics and servicing if anyone want some bedtime reading ?
If you want a dedicated petrol one the best plzce to find one is eBay.de, search for Webasto Benzine.
I has reason to pull my fuel pump last week and the outlet for the heater is technically there but not really. It is just a pip on the top of the houseing which will need the top cutting off and and the fuel feed to the webasto pump feeding down into the tank via a dip tube. No7 - 2003 V8 Vogue

For reference, here is the link to the guy that does the replacement boards. The board he is advertising now has a option for diesel or petrol via a solder joint. I am going to have a look at mine to see if I have the same jumper to convert to petrol.............

i did not change any settings
this it the unit i used to bench test the heater off the car

it ran for hours on petrol, derv and red derv no problem,heated a 25 ltr bucket of water up in around 6 mins and kept it at 78 deg till the battery went flat

i just ran a new fuel line to the petrol pump housing on top of the fuel tank,drilled a small hole in the blanked off FBH take off ,
i drawed fuel up from the tank from the take off with less than 1/4 of a tank so i know the pipe goes down into the tank,
bleed the fbh pump till petrol started to flow, thats it,runs like a gud un Thumbs Up
i mounted the FBH pump under passenger sill at the front for ease of accsess

mine runs on lpg so the heater pipework is a work of art with the FBH connected so pictures would not be clear,
but i got all the bits from LR off the parts manual and microcat

Quick question regarding the fuel pump:

Are the Derv and Petrol pumps the same? I've managed to pick up a petrol FBH for a very good price, can I buy just buy a derv pump as they are common?
