Sebo,

I've also had good experience with my L405s (4th one now). Currently have managed a total mileage of over 90k with only one real let down, which was on my March 2013 SDV8 when the turbo hose split. All of them have been changed at around 35-40k miles. The first was absolutely brand new, the others I changed when the dealer gave me a call and says he has the right spec 10month old vehicle available.

Compare that to my last L322 which had a total of 9 weeks out of 13 in the dealer and don't even start to think back to the Classic days.

Still a bit more to do by JLR but a serious improvement.

Hi Nick, Thanks for the input. I do think it'll get sorted, it feels like a training issue on the service/diagnostics side rather than a bad product.

I just don't want to fall into the old gamblers trap of hoping it'll be better next time!

I suppose I value reliability over almost everything else...

Update: Turbo bank B ordered to be replaced next week-another £3K if it wasn't in warranty. running total currently around £8k. Shocked !

Sebo,

you're welcome. Hopefully you will get the opportunity to properly appreciate the FFRR without further niggles.

Hi All, Here's the update in case anyone comes across this issue..

Secondary turbo was found to have oil from the first turbo's leak clogging up the actuator. This caused a fault reading in the electronic control module, resulting in red triangle limp home mode.

It wasn't blowing blue smoke because the turbos were shut down by the electronically controlled waste gates.

Both turbos have been replaced along with some electrical gremlins and the remote drain recall. Total cost approx £10k if out of warranty.

I'm thinking extended warranty when mine runs out!

Hopefully all will be well for now.

Hi Sebo, I just think you've been unlucky. All of my 405's have been totally reliable (touch wood) and if you were to go back to the German cars, there is no guarantee with any of them. Good luck

I think you're right. I hope my experience with the turbos will help someone else out should they encounter it!

Back in love with the 405 again! Thumbs Up

Here's a piccy

Almost a year to the day and i have the red restricted performance triangle of doom again..

Here we go again. Confused

On the upside i did 2000 miles to/from the Alps last month with the engine light only coming on once- cycling off after the fifth re-start.

Will update when i know whats up.

Oil in turbo actuators bank A & B 'failures'

Hi, I went though this 3 times! If you have the same fault its characterised by getting the yellow engine warning light cycling after 5 starts to begin with followed by engine warning and red triangle with limited performance.
Basically there is a seal that fails in the engine sump from the oil sender unit that allows oil to leak into the wiring loom and via that into the turbo actuator units (which are electronically controlled). They gum up and/or short circuit.
It results in a huge amount of work and is very expensive to fix, (think 2 x turbos, wiring looms and most of the drive train has to be removed for access @ £180+vat per hour) luckily there is a revised part now to hopefully stop it happening again. There is a technical bulletin TSB01087v3. While i had full extended warranty this didn't technically cover it so you have to get your dealer to plead on your behalf...

I just got a new primary turbo twice in a row, but it was replaced by a warranty. And now I've replaced the shut-off valve on the secondary turbo. And so far, it seems to be working.

Previously you wrote: "Secondary turbo was found to have oil from the first turbo's leak clogging up the actuator. This caused a fault reading in the electronic control module, resulting in red triangle limp home mode."

How is it technically possible? That bad primary turbo can damage the secondary turbo? L405 2013 Vogue 4.4 SDV8 339.000km/211.000miles Smile

No its a leak from the oil sender in the sump, I think that the oil 'creeps' along the wire loom which is bundled and enclosed and therefore could go anywhere (doesn't wash away in rain etc). So it's not a leak from the turbo, but when I wrote that that was the info I was given at the time.
The turbos are, as far as I've been told, one unit i.e they don't sell the electronic control actuators separately. Im sure a specialist could separate them though.
Land Rover just chuck them back at the supplier and their insurance takes the hit I suppose. Too much hassle to take them apart.
Ask about the seal as this was the cause of the problem for me and its getting more common hence the TSB.

LR just did this wiring TSB on mine. FOC.

The wiring which needs adapting is the oil level sensor harness. It’s a pretty simple Job to do the wiring update, basically plug and play. The part can be bought if you can’t persuade LR to do the update, it’s about £50 iirc and basically involves adding an extra plug into the harness, to stop the oil tracking down the cable. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yes thats exactly it!
I think they are catching the problem on cars now-from the sounds of it.
You're lucky, mine happened 4 years ago and was unknown problem at that time. One question why does the uprated wiring need a connector to STOP it flowing along the wires? It Shouldn't be able to leak in the first place..

Yes, I'll have it checked to see if they did it when replacing the turbo. Perhaps this is already included in the replacement service manual.

Otherwise, the actuator for the secondary turbo can be purchased separately. L405 2013 Vogue 4.4 SDV8 339.000km/211.000miles Smile

This is what they do for reference.

So the sender doesn’t come out, I’m assuming the bit of wiring they insert stops the oil tracking. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
