Gear selection noise

This seems to be getting worse on the car.. when I select either drive or reverse I get a "thump" I've noticed if I'm gentle with the selector it's not as apparent? I'm servicing the gearbox next week so hoping the new oil may help. Cars also a bit hesitant when you select drive and don't touch accelator it's very slow at moving off.. if I touch the pedal it flys so no issues in it selecting the gear just very slow to move.. in reverse it still moves quickly without touching pedal..??

Hi,

The thump may not be gearbox related - Last year my FF developed a 'thump' when selecting reverse , being a TD6 with it's super strong gearbox lol, I thought it was the gearbox showing it age !! Turned out it was a rear CV joint (it broke a few months later) The thump noise was travelling up the prop shaft into the gearbox area.

Whilst you are underneath get a friend to select reverse and see if there is any movement in the rear driveshafts - Just make sure it's a good friend who will keep the brakes on as you lie next to the rear wheels !! Rolling with laughter

Simon

Thanks for the contribution matey.. you are spot on. Looks like that's my issue not the gearbox. Thumbs Up

It's possible that the universal joint on the rear propshaft is worn/damaged. I had the same problem with my TD6, discussed in my recent post on a rumbling noise under hard acceleration, The clunk I got was due to the universal joint giving slightly when engaging reverse gear.

I will have a wee read of your post shortly. Is it a big repair? Probably one job I will pass over to my mechanic mate tbh.. love working on the car but after doing some research on this I'm out my depth.. 👍

Replacing the propshaft is not a big job, takes about an hour tops to do. If you can't stomach the cost of a new shaft with centre bearing (about £800 for a genuine LR shaft Shocked ) there are plenty of good second hand ones to be had. I got a really good 2nd hand shaft from ebay for £90 from the Furness Car Company.
