I have to say that if you plan to go under your FF without placing axle stands ( even for a 2 second job) you are mad. If that 'one in a million' event of a bag blowing happens when your under, the consequences could be serious.

Agree Paul, off road height selected, then driver's door off the latch (to stop the suspension then resetting), front wheels chocked, 2 jacks and 2 Axle stands gave all the security needed to get right under and do thé job without fear of the car lowering... and still managed to get a bit of black overspray on the silver heatshield Banging Head

Ps... anyone know how to get black overspray off the mottled heatshield?

Satin black looks much better than the matt.

Halfords standard satin spray seems up to the job Thumbs Up

Having twice painted the back boxes on two RR in recent years by using a Halford Satin black spray can, I've found that if you try and clean the box after it has been sprayed, the paint flakes off here and there.

So, I've just brush painted the back box with Hammerite smooth finish satin black. It needs no primer and the previous Halfords satin spray becomes the undercoat.

Prepared it by cleaning the box with soapy water and a cloth. The cloth removed any flaky bits of paint as it was one of those bug remover type finishes. Then rinsed with water, let it all dry and used a paint brush to paint on the Hammerite satin.

Took about an hour, finish looks as good as a spray can and no overspray or need to mask areas off.

I don't think it will flake off as easy. Time will tell.

Thumbs Up

Sorry if I've missed something here, but we went from not getting your farmers hitch off to painting! Did you ever get it off?
I've just done mine, drowned the whole thing in wd40, in the edges of the square hole front and back, then a bit of gentle persuasion with a lump hammer and out she comes. Cleaned up with emery cloth and scotchbrite. Now it only goes on when I need it. Always fit the square bung in the armature hole too so as to prevent crap getting in..
