LED light bar fitted

So due to our annual night drive to the south of France in a few weeks.
I had decided to fit an led light bar to light up the dark motorways in central France.
After doing a few searchs and not realy finding what I was looking for I went at this a bit blind and decided
to incert the bar in my grill, I did spend the first 20 years of my working career in the car industry so am well acquainted with a panel hammer and a spanner.

So the first choice was where in the grill top, middle or bottom as you can see by the pen marks I was going to
put it at the bottom but this would have effected the badge.
So my solution was move the badge up one so out came the hack saw and I cut where the tape is and swapped
them around.

After a touch of plastic welding they were put back in and eventually cleaned up ready to paint

Unfortunately I stopped taking pictures due to my phone giving up the ghost so I will try and explained the rest
I measured in the same amount on both sides so the LED bar would be in the middle and removed the section.
Now originally I was going to mount the bar at the very bottom of the grill but now I had moved the badge I could mount it higher and this would mean a lot less cutting as the bar fitted right in the space I had removed.

To mount the bar I used two short piece of m8 screwed rod washers and nuts
I drilled the aluminium bumper support and tapped a thread into it then screwed the rod in locking it in place with a washer and nut I then put a second nut on the top of the rods followed by a washer.
This then allowed me to put the light bar brackets on to the rod and lock it down with another washer and nut , using the screwed rod meant I was now able to adjust the hight on the bar and make sure it was level by moving the bottom nut up and down.

I had to cut a couple of slots in the grill to allow for the bracket on the LED bar which you can see in the finished pictures and also a couple of slots in the bottom of the grill inline with the screwed rod to allow the grill to sit flush but these are hidden once it's all back together.

As the light bar I used was not curved it sticks out about 1/4 inch on each side but I can live with that
I also made some changes when it came to wiring it up as I did not want a switch inside the car and I also did not want it to light up straight a way if using high beam to flash someone , so I wire in an adjustable delay relay so now when I switch on high beam there is a delay of around 2 seconds before the bar gets power.

Again sorry for the lack of pictures

tidy work but you don't really need any aux lighting as the oe xenon should be sufficient... ... - .- -.

I have to agree the xenon lights are extremely good on there own and have recently put new bulbs in these as well, as
I was starting to get faults on the dash for them every now and then.
And with the LED bar as well the road lights up like a Christmas tree Smile

Holy sh*t that's bright. The Autoroute can be a dark and dangerous place at night so I think this is a good move. Nice install too and if/when you need to sell you will pick a grill up cheap as chips.

Be interested how you wired and switched this Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I did a similar thing on my old L322. I can't seem to find many pics of it now. Initially I tried to cut down the original grille as in the first pic and then got a new replacement mesh style one (mainly as it hid the ambers better). Yours looks great, much better than mine did. Wife has told me I can't do this on the new one I am picking up on Friday though :'(

Here are the answers to the couple of questions people asked

The light bar can be found Here

The wiring loom from Here

The timer relay Here

As for the wiring it was wired in the normal way with the loom and all I did was replace the rocker switch on the loom with the timer relay . At the point of switch power ON (I used the live feed to the hight beam for this), the timer delay starts . Upon expiry of the time between 1 and 50 sec the relay turns ON and remain in this position until power is switched OFF. At the point of switch off, the timer resets, ready for the next operation.

Hope this helps

I have a couple of 6inch light bars fitted low down either side of the numberplate, both aimed to the side for off road illumination, also put one at the back wired to the reversing lights. These are very cheap, about 4 pounds each

Low-wattage LED lights can be left on for extended periods of time without draining or killing the battery, making them perfect rock lights for low-speed wheeling and night time trail repairs. The stock reversing lights we know are woeful, having to rely on them backing up on a tricky track is no fun where a cheap light overcomes this shortfall. 2007 TDV8 VSE

I was gifted one of these light bars that seem to be on nearly every 4x4 over here in Aus. Not wanting to cut anything or make obvious holes I had a play today and made up a couple of brackets bolted to the slam panel behind the grill. All fitted and working but could come off in 15mins with no signs it was ever there. I already have an aux fusebox under the bonnet with a relay switched feed that comes on with the main beam so was a very simple job to connect. Not sure if I will leave it on or just fit when I am out in the wilds.
