Variation in service costs

I hadn't realised until recently, but it's now possible to book routine servicing via the LR website.

It's pretty easy to use and gives pricing as well.

With a few minutes to spare, I compared the pricing of the minor service for my car at a few dealership locations around the UK. I didn't expect the prices to be the same everywhere but there were a few surprises, including the fact that some of the London locations aren't the most expensive (which seems to be the Thames Valley).

This is not a comprehensive list but might be of interest.....

Inverness 170.09
Wimbledon 396.05
Cupar 404.25
Elgin 415.01
Chertsey 418.15
Plymouth 418.43
Perth 423.45
Yeovil 435.54
Exeter 437.69
Bradford 445.38
Conwy 453.93
Aberdeen 487.85
Ascot 511.53
Basingstoke 521.69
Pulborough 521.69
Thames Ditton 540.33
West London 548.09
Guildford 553.74
Liverpool 562.25
Slough 572.45
Reading 572.45 2016 SDV8 AB

Looks like they don't care about anything older than 2006. But for anything newer it would almost be worth the drive to Inverness for the savings. Tom

This sounds like a weekend in Inverness could be good value for money. The difference in service cost would buy the beer and pay for the hotel.

The variation in prices makes one wonder if they are like for like. Could it be that different dealers are interpreting differently? Just a thought.

Would be worth establishing what the dealer is offering before committing. John

I'd hazard a guess that Inverness have forgotten something on the Service Spec & when booking in they would remember. Could be lucky that they may not & you get that fantastic deal.

Having not had to endure LR Service yet as only bought 2 months ago, a difference of 200 would not be uncommon & is about the same with BMW & Audi. Always worthwhile shopping about & i ended up getting my M5 serviced near my office in Suffolk, rather than near home in Lancashire as we often a good 20% cheaper. Paul

Wonder if there is plus vat or inc vat issue?

If not then you could use that as a bargaining tool?

I guess Inverness are pricing an oil change as just that.

Ffs. My local stealer wants 520 just for an oil change.
No thanks. My local indie wants the same as Inverness.

10 per litre for C1 5w-30. 9.5 litres.
Then a filter. 30 quid.
Labour. An hour.

Comes to 170 quid.

Bit of a difference between an oil change and a service (which is what SHOULD be provided by a main dealer) Thumbs Up

400+ is rather excessive though, even for a service

I'd put my own details in for a 105k service at pentland Cupar, which was just oil & screenwash!

Six years ago I did a bit of a survey of how main dealer servicing costs varied around the UK, when making online bookings through the LR website (see top of this thread).

A lot has happened in six years (understatement?) but when I took another look at this recently I found that when using the same online booking system there seems to be full harmonisation of prices irrespective of dealer group or location - ie no point in location shopping any more. Perhaps this is laying the groundwork towards the future JLR “agency” model.

However I was also surprised to see that in these inflationary times, the current harmonised service costs are now lower in many locations than they were in 2017. As far as I can tell, the equivalent minor service cost which compares with all the prices shown above is now £427.

I’m not sure that the Inverness tourist board will be too pleased about this… 2016 SDV8 AB
