Took the plunge and fitted new alternator.

You may know from my prev thread I'd been suffering. Well it ended in a discussion with a friend who has seen a few of these before telling me it was dying. Went and bought one and took about 3 hr to fit. Was a nice simple job really. Im not affraid of doin most jobs and am well used to spannering so was releived to get it done so quick. Thanks to the wiki of course Thumbs Up

Nice work Thumbs Up

I've had my alternator replaced on several occasions on the fatty. Each time, there have been no obvious (to me anyway) signs of impending failure. The most recent time, there was a high pitch, like a supercharger 'whine' in the moments leading to its demise. Just curious as to what your friend used to diagnose a failing alternator? Obviously, if there is something that I can keep an eye out for, I could avoid seeing my beloved on the back of a tow truck again!

And +1 on he wiki guidance on here! If I need to replace again, will be doing it myself rather than shelling out another kidney for my local LR dealerships service Very Happy

Cheers

BP

All i did was keep an eye on the voltages over a couple of days. I had all sorts of wierd electrical problems. I thought once an alternator went, it went completely but my freind says thats not always the case. One day it was fine at 14.7v, Then the next it would stick at 13v and if i loaded it up by switching everything on it would drop to 12v and not move when revving. Now it drops to 12.5v and shoots right up to 14.7v at 2000rpm with it all loaded up.

Thanks. Yeah loads of things pointing towards alternator. Its at 82000 miles which apparently is common for them to go at this mileage. Bought a denso unit from euro car parts.

Is the 2007 TDV8 alternator problem prevalent with the 2007 Supercharged? I've not heard of it being a problem (with the S/C) but keen to know if it is confined to the TDV8.

Does anyone know the part numbers between the two? I bet Dan does....

Pete.

I have just replaced mine. It had developed a whine, but I could not detect any problems whatsoever, but I was pretty sure it was the alternator.

It took about an hour by removing coolant reservoir, its mounting bracket and a few hoses. My main problem was removing the electrical connector. I was foxed by the new Denso unit where it was clear that there was a catch but I could not get it to shift on the old one. After various tentative jabs witch screwdrivers etc, I snipped away the plastic surround which is part of the alternator cap and found the catch on the other side. The old Denso unit had the connector fitted 180 degrees different to the new one.

Anyway, something to look out for.

Once replaced, whine has gone. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4
