Oil Grade

Hi folks,

I know the recommended grade is 5w30 for 3.6 TDV8 but I was wondering if there was any harm using 5w40?

Also where the best place to buy a genuine service kit? i.e. Oil filter, fuel filter etc

Why would you want higher viscosity?
Do you think the recommended spec trades fuel economy against wear and tear?

Cheers .. I came across that page.. basically from a cold starting point it doesn't make a difference and it's never gonna be 40° in UK.

Just really wanted person experiences of members in the forum

Try Dan at duckworths for service kit.

The 3.6 has a ford spec oil it needs. WSS M2C 913 B. Its pretty easy to come across, and theres no good reason to use anything different, its not an expensive thing to get hold of and is readily available at motor factors and from Opie etc

What is your rationale for wanting to use something different? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

cheers mate..

My rationale is that I have about 20 litres of Miller's fully synthetic 5w40 which I used in my Shogun. I've always bought in bulk and works out cheaper.

it's a good oil and thinking if the hot rating of 40 really makes a difference. In Scotland we hardly get to 30 degrees let alone 40.

its not just the viscosities which have to be looked at but SAPS levels and lifespans of the oils too.

for example you can get a 5w30 oil which is a ACEA C1 and a 5W30 which is a C3 which aren't the same in terms of performance.

also you can get a semi synth in 5W30 and fully synth in 5w30. again different and will have marginally different wear rates etc for the engine.

Personally would stick with the grade and spec LR specify. Be careful though there are some semi synth oils such as Shell HX which are WSS m2C913b but are a semi synth. they meet the standard set but personally would favour a fully synth. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Higher viscosity will put additional pressure on your oil pump...
Will reduce MpG

For newer engines with finer tolerances you need less viscous oils...
