United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Vogue TDV6 Santorini Black

Not sure I understand exactly what happened. I accept that if the key is by a window it is possible for the thief to amplify the signal and open the car. But to drive off something extra is needed. In the past they were using the OBD port to create a key but there was a software update in 2016 which was supposed to make the Key Validation Module read only. So either the software update had not happened or, alarmingly, it proved ineffective. Do we know which?

They could also put it on a flat bed or covered truck.

Or it's possible the OP didn't get the update martinf mentioned. Not sure how robust that procedure is.

If InControl can tell and alert it's been taken, can they not disable the car remotely?

. Cheers, Greg

Hi all,

An update for you.

But first, thanks for all your kind messages of support.

I have maligned the boys in blue because they have been quite proactive.

The car was stolen around 2am this morning.
InControl informed me and I rang 999.
According to the police, within 15 minutes 5 or 6 police cars were heading for a field a few miles away where the tracker was still transmitting...must have been a quiet night on the murder front!
Sadly, when they got arrived there was no car, just my number plates and ripped out tracker plus a few of my personal items dumped.

I had various calls from InControl and the police today (whilst I was at a family funeral...difficult) and have given my permission for them to access the sim card in the car which is still transmitting.
They are going to attempt to do a GSM triangulation to locate the car.

I have more details but don't want to jeopardise the ongoing investigation.

Thanks again gents...but keep your keys a long way from the car at night.

Cheers,

Tony If it ain't broken, fix it till it is.

Sadly nothing is safe anymore, you can add as much security as you like it does deter the petty thief but if they really want it they will take it

Just imagine 17t wagon big winch, wheel dollies, ramp and a curtail covering your pride and joy sounding it's alarm off

Now add the word recovery to the curtain no-one would bat an eye lid as your car alarms going past

Trackers generally work on GPS signals not difficult to get GPS blockers, phones work on GSM again not hard to block a signal

Hi Martin,

You're a bit more tech savvy than me.
I have no idea if the update you mention was actioned but my car has been serviced annually by a main dealer.

My main gripe is:
How can a £100K car that is double locked and alarmed, with both the keyfobs in my bedroom, be entered, stolen and driven off without any form of key/keyfob being present in the car.

I will keep my powder dry for a few days before I vent my anger.

BTW, JLR have not contacted me in any way despite their repeated contact with the police.

Cheers,

Sorry to hear the news. Sadly, this is apparently very common. JLR obviously don't shout about it as it exposes serious flaws in the way our vehicles are designed. Many many Range Rovers have been stolen near us in Essex and barely any are recovered. The InControl tracker is meant to be so well integrated and into the vehicle that it's near impossible to remove. Obviously not!

Would seem kind of dumb that the thieves were savvy enough to rip out the tracker, but leave the infotainment SIM in place - but then again, that SIM is a newer feature, so maybe they haven't updated their checklist yet.......

Right, its unbelievable they knew exactly where the tracker was and was able to remove it so quickly.

Is it a standard tracker in the 405?

Plates ripped off too - replaced with a set stolen off same model / same colour. Aka cloning to avoid ANPR.

Can InControl not disable the car remotely? Cheers, Greg

I had my E70 X5 stolen and later recovered by tracker.
We had cctv on our drive and the thieves arrived hooded and played around with what looked like a laptop under the car for around 20 minutes in the middle of the night and then went away. A couple of hours later they came back with a key, unlocked the car - single hazard flashed like when you unlock it - got in and drove off.
Police said stolen to order etc etc
They had left it in an industrial estate in kent unattended for a couple of days - maybe to see if it would be recovered by tracker? Current

Partial update.
No car, no insurance payout yet.
JLR Customer Service won't help in any way...they refuse to tell me how my car could have been stolen.
They refused my request for a courtesy car or help in replacing the car.
Escalating at present...I'm still fuming.
I'll update further next week but I think my relationship with JLR and their cars is close to ending.

Only if involved in an accident, not when stolen.
It's the repairers, not the insurance company, who provide it. If it ain't broken, fix it till it is.
