How to dismantle side vents

I wanted to dismantle my triple fin side vents so I could spray them with body colour paint, rather than buy the cheap rubbish I found on the Bay, and rather than pay someone else to do it. It's not very hard, so here's a how-to:

First you need to remove the side vents, this is easy and a consistent across all L322 models from 2002-2012. There is a wiki about this already so follow this link (also done by me)

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic1069.html

Once you have the side vents on the bench it's time to take them apart. You'll need a thin screwdriver to prise the bits apart and a patient hand, this is plastic remember and can break easily if you go at it like a bull in a china shop.

In the picture below you can see the three main parts, you'll see the tags that hold the bits together, and the silver mesh part has 3 small phillips screws too. Note, there is a wedge piece in the centre fixing between the brunel grey panel and the silver mesh, you can see it in my picture. KEEP IT! You might find the mesh bit is stuck a little, as there's a thin foam line around the edge that helps it bond together.

Once in bits you can start to work on it. I rubbed mine down with wet and dry, then put 2 coats of grey primer on:

Next I gave them 3 coats of gloss black from Halfords, then 2 coats of Santorini black top coat. Next I rubbed down with wet and dry to flat it off, then gave them about 5 coats of lacquer. They're still not as glossy as the main bodywork, but they are at least the same shade of black and, the originals were a matt finish anyway, these are now better.

I then gave the silver mesh parts a thorough degrease and cleaned with Autosol metal polish to get the in-ground dirt off, they look much better, and then cleaned the back panels too.

Tomorrow I shall put them back together and hopefully refit with no problems and show you the finished article. Discovery 4 HSE

You will get them glossy but need to let dry properly and rub down with compound. Use your polishing machine with fav polish and they will be spot on. Might be a good idea to use a vice to hold in place whilst polishing Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

I reassembled the side vents today, this is incredibly easy. Some pics to illustrate and show the end result.

The first shot shows the wedge piece you needed to keep, in place in the centre fixing:

The final shot shows the vent in place: All done and looking neater.

Thread revival.....sorry.

Just found this as i'm looking to colour code my side vents. Taking the side vents to bits would be better for painting, does anyone have a copy of the pictures from the original post? 2011 RR Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Thanks Stan. To be clear though, once the side vents are out you can further dismantle them? 2011 RR Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

yes you can...theres a little bit of plastic, like a wedge which needs to go back to keep the bits 'solid'....the plastic is of the brittle variety so be careful and take your time.. ... - .- -.

Brilliant news. Just need to find the instructions to remove them again, I have front mud flaps so a few extra screws I believe.

I have a few other bits that need doing too but whether I go santorini black on them all i'm not so sure yet.

Side vents
Bonnet vent
wiper cowl
may as well give wiper arms a fresh lick of paint too while they are off
door handles, although they are not too bad thinking of getting the door handle covers from powerfuluk for ease

Do you think all those parts in body colour would be too much? 2011 RR Autobiography 4.4 TDV8
