Brake Pads and Discs

Hi folks,

I had the Brake Disc Worn message today. I will open up the front right and the rear left wheel to see if its the sensor that needs fix but thinking while I'm there I should also change the discs and pads as they don't look the best.

Front Discs - Can anyone help me with the front disc and pads part numbers? I always do the discs and pads myself so confident with that. Any hints about the best way to wind the two caliper pistons in?

Rear Discs - Been reading about this and understand its slightly complicated due to electronic handbrake. Any hints and tips for this? If I am doing the pads its not a problem but the read discs look like they need replaced. Can anyone help me with the part numbers?

I cant find a decent electronic parts catalogue. Micocat seems to be down but you could be selecting any part as there is no way of entering the VIN and seeing the actual part. Anyone know what JLR use and whether we can have access to it or any decent EPC?

It is Front Left and Rear Right on my FFRR. Did they change it through the years?

If you want original equipment just ask Dan at Duckworths, giving him your VIN number (by PM!), or if less bothered Europarts and your Reg Number should bear fruit.

You can buy a cheap piston pusher kit from Halfords, or a fancy set on eBay. I made my own tool once with a large nut and bolt, some spacers and a 2p piece!

Can't help with the electronic handbrake, sorry. .

Cheers Joe.. thanks for the correction about the brake wear sensors.

Im thinking of getting the front coated discs and get genuine LR pads from Dan.

The rear ones I need some dos and donts as I dont have the IID Tool to reset the electronic parking brake. Dont want to mess things up. Current:

Not a prolific poster on here though when I bought my car (2010 5.0) it had just had rear discs fitted by the dealer I bought it from, or at least his local garage due to an MOT advisory.

I took it in to my local Independent for a check over when I got it home, and he told me that the parking brake was out of adjustment as the people who did the discs hadn't set it up properly as they wouldn't have had the correct tool, so yes, you apparently will need something like IID (my guy uses Autologic) to reset the handbrake.

I suppose that logically you could do most of the work yourself and then just get it set up afterwards, though I've never looked at the system so not 100% sure. Dave

Rear Disc Brake - Brake Disc
Removal and Installation
Removal
WARNING: If installing a new brake disc, install new brake pads.
CAUTION: Brake discs must be renewed in pairs.
NOTES:
If the parking brake shoes or the brake discs have been removed for access to other components then DO NOT carry
out the bedding in procedure.
The brake pad wear warning indicator sensor must be replaced each time the brake pads are serviced.
RH illustration shown, LH is similar.
Using the Land Rover approved diagnostic system, drive the
parking brake to the 'mounting position'.

Disconnect the battery ground cable.
For additional information, refer to: Specifications (414-00 Battery and
Charging System - General Information, Specifications).
WARNING: Make sure to support the vehicle with axle
stands.
Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the rear wheels and tires.
CAUTION: The brake pad wear indicator sensor
is easily damaged. Do not use a lever to remove the
sensor. Use fingers only.
RH side rear: Disconnect the brake pad wear indicator
sensor wiring harness.
NOTE: Use an additional wrench to prevent the
component from rotating.
Remove the brake caliper lower bolt.

NOTE: Note the orientation of the brake pads.
Remove the brake pads.
Rotate the brake caliper upwards.
Remove the 2 clips.
CAUTION: Do not allow the brake caliper to
hang on the brake hose.
Remove the brake caliper anchor bolts.
Release the brake caliper.
Tie the brake caliper aside.
NOTE: Rotate the rear brake disc to locate the
parking brake shoe adjuster.
Release the parking brake shoe adjustment.
Remove the parking brake shoe adjuster access
plugs.

Rotate the parking brake shoe adjuster.
Remove the rear brake disc.
Remove the Allen screw.
Installation
Make sure that the rear brake disc and hub mating surfaces are
clean.
Install the rear brake disc.
Tighten the Allen screw to 16 Nm (12 lb.ft).
Install the brake caliper anchor bolts
Clean the component mating faces.
Tighten the bolts to 65 Nm (48 lb.ft). plus a further 90 degrees.
WARNING: Do not use compressed air to clean brake
components. Dust from friction materials can be harmful if inhaled.
Clean the brake caliper housing and anchor plate using brake cleaning
fluid.

5. Inspect the caliper piston and slide pin seals for damage.
CAUTIONS:
The brake caliper should move freely on both slide pins.
If necessary, renew the components.
Check the slide pins for correct operation.
CAUTION: Check the brake fluid reservoir level before
pushing the piston back, failure to follow this instruction may result in
damage to the vehicle.
NOTE: As the piston is pushed back into the caliper housing, the
brake fluid level in the reservoir will rise. Do not allow the reservoir to
overflow.
Press the piston into the caliper housing.
CAUTION: If installed, the adhesive strips covering the outer
brake pads must be removed before installation. Failure to follow this
instruction may result in damage to the vehicle.
If installed, remove the adhesive strips from the 2 outer brake pads.
NOTE: Make sure the brake pads are installed in the correct
orientation.
Install the brake pads.
Install the 2 clips.
Rotate the brake caliper downwards.
Tighten the bolt to 32 Nm (24 lb.ft).
RH side rear: Connect the brake pad wear indicator sensor wiring
harness.
Adjust the parking brake.
For additional information, refer to: Parking Brake Shoe and Lining
Adjustment (206-05 Parking Brake and Actuation, General
Procedures).
NOTE: Tighten the wheel nuts in the sequence
shown:
Install the wheels and tires.
Stage 1 : 4Nm
Stage 2 : 70Nm
Stage 3 : 140Nm
14. Connect the battery ground cable.

When I replaced the rear discs on my SC last year, I simply parked on level ground, gear selector in 'N', handbrake off and wheel chocks in-place.

No problems whatsoever. Very easy and incredibly quick.

Once you've the rear brake caliper off, removing the disc is a 60 second job and it's the same to fit the new one.

I have made a rather rash assumption that a 2010 model works the same way as a 2007, though. Si. <This is my name.

No special tools area required to replace the back discs.

There is an installation procedure which beds the pads to the disc though and an adjuster which just needs a screwdriver to flick round

The bedding in is a driving process where you hold on the EPB. It's detailed in RAVE. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

cheers guys, I assume I am not changing the brake shoes should be ok.

Bellini, did you move the adjust at all? I am wondering whether the disc will come off without loosening the adjuster? Just want to make sure I don't end up messing the EPB Current:

As the park-brake was off anyway due to being released, the disc slid straight off without any problems.

I didn't adjust at all and my park-brake works exactly as it did before I changed the discs. Si. <This is my name.
