Low Mileage 4.4TDV8 needs new Turbo - Newbie Advice Please

Hello,

I have been a member of the Disco3 sister forum over the last few years, having recently sold our Discovery we are now looking to replace it with either a newer Discovery 4 or a Range Rover (L322) model hence I have joined the FullFat forum Smile

Just wanted to get some advice; We have found a low mileage 61 plate Range Rover 4.4 TDV8 Vogue with 44k miles and full service history for sale with 29 days extended warranty remaining. Prior to viewing we checked all was in order with car & services etc... Upon further investigation it turns out the car is currently at the LR main dealers having a new Turbo fitted (as it went into limp mode) and it also requires a new front CV joint replacing again under warranty. I understand the car has been mainly used for driving around London, in last two years it's only done 15,000 miles. My guess is the Turbo failure may have something to do with the DPF & or EGR due to the low mainly inner city miles blocking things up.

It needs new rear brake pads and air conditioning gassing and a full service too outside of warranty to but this kind of work was not a shock to me.

Just wanted to ask is this a common problem with the 4.4 TDV8 ? Also is having the CV joint replaced when only 44k on the clock normal?

I guess if both these jobs are completed under warranty and service done the car should still be a good buy?

Advice appreciated Thumbs Up

John

Not heard of many turbo failures on the 4.4.

I would question if it is the actual turbo or something else. There are several things which can cause limp home mode on that side of the engine, mostly down to blown short hoses on the intake plastic manifold, or a sticky changeover valve on the secondary turbo.

It's also worth asking if it's had the turbo drain mod done. If not it may well produce large clouds of white smoke under hard acceleration.

Not heard of any CV joint failures either so that's unusual..... the boots do go after a while but a total failure at 44k is odd.

There are loads out there so if you think something is up then walk away. If it's under LR warranty currently then this should be extendable. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Forgot to ask how long can you extend the LR warranty for exactly?

Agree with NMJ it does seem a bit off.

It's not outside the realms of possibility that whoever is doing the warranty work is billing an expensive part & job to the warranty to keep their numbers up for the month....

. Cheers, Greg
