Eaton M112....The old & the new!??!

Hi All,

This afternoon I removed my old Supercharger ready to fit the new one with the 10% pulley, so for those who might still have an interest in changing their pulley on their 4.2 S/C, but don't know the difference, here you are:

I have a really harsh bearing noise coming from high up in the area around the rear of the charger. The usual thing....the noise was only under load and roughly between 1800 & 2300 rpm (the rev range where most driving is done), so I am thinking that it is the rear bearings in the charger. My car has done 186K miles so my thinking is that the charger bearings would probably need replacing. I also really fancied a 10% pulley upgrade so when I found a NOS unit with unmarked teflon coated rotors on the bay of thieves for silly money, it was a no brain decision. I had the new charger sent to Powerhouse who checked it over (yes definitely new), re-greased the bearings (as a sensible precaution) & installed the new pulley. Very Happy
When the new "metal throttle body to elbow gasket" (9E931 £0.80+ VAT) and rubber "elbow to charger gasket" (9M436 £3.65+ VAT) arrive from Land Rover tomorrow I'll throw it all back together..... Rolling with laughter
Cheers,

Did it cure the noise is the main question Smile

I cut the belt on mine to stop it being driven, but the noise persisted so was confident it wasn't SC... I have a long list of what it isn't lol.

Hi All,

Well it's 9.25pm and I've just finished throwing it back together.....yes I know "what took so long?" but it's not the easiest of jobs.....the parts didn't arrive until gone 4pm.....I've been to a planning meeting this evening.....it's dark and raining and I've been working outside...... and, and.....Whistle Very Happy

Everything's all properly cleaned up and looking good but I've had to re-use the old "throttle body elbow to charger" gasket because "Land Rover couldn't find one at the factory"....???? It seems OK, isn't leaking and looks to be designed to be re-used anyway.

I probably made life more awkward for myself because I've done the job without disconnecting any of the cooling system, electrical connections and I am currently still running the old belt, but I've now got to strip the front down to change the air con condenser, so I'll probably fit the new belt then.

Right then, a word to the wise!!

"If you are going to attempt to change your charger yourself at home unless you are about ten feet tall with elastic arms and surgeon's fingers use your IID tool to drop the suspension down to "transportation!??!" height"!!

You know.....the setting lower than "access height". I made the mistake of only going to access height and I'm on 255/55R20 tyres, so I've been climbing up & down a lot or lying full stretch on top the engine which ain't comfy!!

OK so the important bit:

Yes, she spools up very, very quickly on no load, and yes she whines nicely (but that might just be the old belt) however I've not driven her yet because I've already started stripping out the slam panel so the headlights are loose. If we don't get the liquid sunshine we are promised for tomorrow then I'll attack the condenser but this also not that easy because it is sandwiched the S/C and water rads......the joys of owning a S/C Fatty......!??! Confused
Now off to find some food!

Very Disco..... I'll write a "How to" when I've finished it all, and managed to compress the pictures etc. Rolling Eyes

Dan...... I'll let you know when I've driven her, but knowing my luck......!??!

The new charger is much smoother and, if you ignore the whine, it seems much quieter. The downside is that it has emphasised other noises from the front of the engine, but I'm hoping that this will improve again when I change the belt for the new one.
I'll keep you posted,

I've got the IID BT version and it gives me the option of lower again than access height, which from memory is the transportation setting & probably used for going on and off car transporters.
You couldn't drive anywhere like it because the wheels are pretty much right up in the arches and she'll probably also be on the bump stops. 55 S/C L322 Zambesi Silver.....GONE!!

Well I drove her yesterday for a 40 odd mile round trip. All "A" roads (there are no motorways in Cornwall) and a what a pleasing difference. Thumbs Up

Previously when you pressed the throttle gently for sensible "in traffic" driving there was what seemed like a delay and it required more pedal movement than you would expect. Not any more.....very gentle pedal movements = gentle increases speed and big pedal movements = huge increases in speed !! Very Happy

When you bury your throttle pedal in the carpet the car takes off with a vengeance, but it does not seem as dramatic as before, probably because the charger was already spinning faster!? Confused

In general the whole driving experience is much smoother and feels even more refined than before. My feeling is that consumption should improve slightly because less throttle opening is required for given speeds because of the smaller pulley.

Now everything is assembled there is slightly more supercharger whine on hard acceleration, but for normal gentle and "in traffic" driving there isn't an appreciable difference.

The overhaul of the charger (or in this case replacement) was definitely worth the expense and in my opinion so was the 10% pulley upgrade. I now have one less bearing noise to worry about, which is great, but am probably now in the same position as Dan_uk_1984, with other noises to eliminate.

Cheers,
