Model "codes"

Someone on here will probably know the answer to a random question...

I always wonder why cars get different model numbers such as P38, L322, L 405 and so on.

I think that the P38 was so called because that was the building number in which the car was developed.

But other than it simply being the projected number, can't see where L322 and L 405 come from. I'm hoping it's something as "romantic" as P 38.

If they're just project numbers, were L 323 to L404 design studies for a replacement L322, and if so, is there an archive where we can have a beak at them?

The code name for the P38 during development was "Pegasus" - I think that is the P and 38 was the building number.

The ‘L’ refers to Lode Lane. I think the numbers still refer to a building or project number.

Are you sure? I gather it rather comes from BMW's naming.

Also the FL2 (L359), Disco Sport (L550) and Evoque (L538) were/are not build (or designed) in Solihull l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l
