Update report.

I have read through hundreds of reports from owners of 4.4 tdv8s and logged the faults reported.

It is too early to take my findings as gospel, but I will continue to update it during the coming winter months and then decide if it is worth continuing.
My initial findings are :-

1) The original design of the 4 short rubber hoses on the inlet plenum chamber to manifolds is the number 1 Fault with 8 failures of 1 or more hose. This usually shows up as restricted performance, followed by DPF full warnings.
The good news is that the replacement hoses are much tougher and are a fairly easy job to replace. They cost approx £100 for the set of 4 with new jubilee clips.

2) their have been 3 reports of splits in the plastic manifolds which result in similar warnings.
Two have been in the plenum part where the seam has split, and one more worrying in the actual manifold which split very near the join to the rubber hose. One report quoted approx £500 for replacement of the plenum chamber and the 4 hoses.
No final fix has been reported for the manifold split, but this is a considerable bigger fault to fix and the replacement part is likely to be costly.

3) Two owners have reported failure of the TFT instrument panel due to overheating.
Both were fixed under warranty so no further details available.
I have read the Workshop Manual and it describes a separate fan unit mounted near the steering column which blows cold air through plastic ducting to both the TFT and the centre screen to prevent them overheating.
This must surely be the actual failure rather than the screens??

4) Thanks to Craig's posting detailing an oil leak from the turbo oil feed pipe at the centre back of the engine, several owners have fixed the problem using Viton O rings size, 9mm x 1.8mm. (available from eBay in packs of 10 ) very cheaply.

5) One gearbox is reported to have been changed, but given that this car is now still going strong with 220k miles on the clock, I for one will not worry about that too much, but I do intend to have it mega- flushed next year when my car reaches 75k.miles.

Please Please keep reporting any problems and fixes so that I can keep the log updated for everyone's benefit.

Cheers

Great work BB!

Mine had it's starter motor replaced under warranty before I had it.

There was mention of CSOV valve - I think you posted on that one

Also the usual turbo drain mod - this one is not a failure though.

And the recall to do with the AGM battery.

. Cheers, Greg

Thanks gonna etc.

My CSOV was well and truly stuck and replaced with the modified unit under warranty, but suprising , no one else has reported the same failure.
I can't believe JLR designed a modified unit if so few have failed, but only time will tell.
I was told by the technician who fixed mine at the M D that he had changed a few and that early 4.4 L405's suffer the same problem ??

I haven't included the turbo drain mod because it is a well documented design failure rather than a fault causing a breakdown.

I only saw 1 mention of starter motor replacement and assume all batteries were upgraded to AGM under recall ?

Hi Mike, fair enough on your classifications e.g. turbo drain and AGM.
What and where is a CSOV?

Nice one Mike.
there have been a few mentions of adaptive dynamic faults with the frayed cable under the front strut caps. mine went at around 70k. Very easy fix.

There is also mention of condensation in the rear light clusters and quite a few mentions of the tailgate end strips bubbling at the bottom. Also the rear tailgate rust issue again for me that was around 70k but clear age is the relevsnt measure here - 5 yrs..

Gonna...

When demand requires it, approx 2500 revs the Cchange Over valve opens and directs air supply to 2nd turbo .

Because I am an old sod who rarely thrashes my car beyond 2500rpm, the valve gets very little use and due to the original design having very little travel plus it gets cover in road dirt salt etc in winter it didn't operate and hence restricted

performance when 2nd turbo can't work.

It is right at the front bottom of the engine.
I give mine a squirt of white lithium grease every now and then and since it was replaced it has been fine.

Adrian,
Mine was repaired before I bought it (50,000) miles,
It's on my list to add next month along with leaking rear shocks, again quite common, but not an MOT fail issue apparently?

October update:
I think I have got the measure of 4.4 tdV8 issues from reading hundreds of old posts, but:-

3 further issues worth keeping an eye on, both for owners and people looking to buy.

1) Starting problems have been, inked to an unusually high number of starter motors being replaced on 2011 onwards models, but strangely they nearly all occurred in early life, with very few reports in recent years???

2) A very common problem in the earlier years was “Adaptive Dynamic “ failure alarm, which is usually easily fixed by repairing the broken wire/s in the top of the strut. It is well documented and can either be fixed by buying the repair kit or by soldering a new piece of wire to the broken wire.

3) Owners should be on the lookout for engine oil leaking from the oil cooler/ heat exchanger unit into the V of the engine block and also, more seriously into the cooling system

I shall continue to log all reported faults over the coming winter months and update this post as necessary, but I think by then we will all be aware of the most common failures and I will close the topic.

Happy motoring and remember batteries take a hammering if you mainly do short runs during winter months.
Thanks to everyone for sending me Fault experiences.
Cheers
