I'll be following the timing chain job if you keep posting about it.

Do you have to remove the through-sump drive shaft or is there a lower cover below that? I should go and read RAVE. Very Happy

Re the thermostat mod, I've done it but I think, if I was considering it now, I'd just buy the bolt-on lower temp housing that doesn't have the heating element. It's been shown in another thread. Ron B. VK2OTC

I looked at RAVE. It might be worth dropping the lower sump cover to see it there is any plastic chain guide in there. Perhaps when I do the next oil change. Ron B. VK2OTC

From what I can see and I am properly wrong but the earlier housing and thermostat which was fitted to the earlier models, the thermostat was 10mm shorter, if this is correct, then it would be no good.
The closest I have found so far is this one, it is 82mm dia, would be better if it was 84mm
The base is 51mm, the original is 43mm

Anybody out there who ordered this part yet ? Its the BEHR thermostat model TI 3288 for the 740 diesel.

BMW part number is OEM NUMBER 11512248542 THERMOSTAT / opening at 88 degrees...

Has the exact same dimensions and design as the BEHR thermostat TM 12 105 --- this is OEM number 1153 1 436 386 / for BMW / opening at 105 degrees ... which is the same as "our" original OE PEL000060 / for LAND ROVER

Hope to hear more....

Removed the crankshaft boss to day
I had made a flange to bolt on to the boss during the week, it fitted nice and snug and I bolted it on with the eight bolts.
I removed it and welded a bar on it, so it would jam on the chassis
When I replaced it, it was a bit tighter fit, the welding had shrunk it slightly, that’s normal.
I removed the boss bolt and then I removed the flange and then the boss.
The boss was quite loose on the crank I thought.
Although I didn’t think the flange was to tight a fit on the boss, it must have been as it broke part of the locating collar off the boss.
The boss is made of cast iron, not steel
SO, I am up for a new boss. RR 2005 4.4 petrol

I used the above guides combined with Rave manual and there is a complete guide on you tube that I used that was about 10 videos long that was really helpful.
I labelled every wire I unplugged and every bag of nuts or bolts.
I also took about 100 photos
Good luck

I replaced all 3 chains although none of mine showed any wear really at 110k miles and I replaced the cam chain guides as well as all the timing chain guides of course but even the timing chain guides looked fine but mine has never been on lpg which is my theory that the higher engine temps makes the guides brittle.
I replaced the valley pan with a new febi one as it comes with the gasket sealant already applied and I changed the PCV valve while I was there as it was easy to reach.
Depending on your kit, you may need to modify the flywheel locking tool as the BMW uses a straight locking pin where the L322 needs a 90 degree pin, you can see my modified pin and also where it protrudes through the flywheel on the other side.

This is the crank holding tool I used for the insanely tight crank bolt
