Smoke after idle.

They 2005 td6 has a smoking problem.

If I sit in the car with it idling for say 15mins when a go to drive away I get plooms of white smoke For 300 meters then it clears. The same hapend when stuck in road works for 15mins. The car stats no problem with no smoke and drives fine with no smoke it's only when I pull away after a longish idle time.

Any ideas? I asked a mate and he said it's the bmw td6 and that they all do it and there is nothing that can be done. Please tell me it's not so.

Thanks

I sat in the car last week with the csr idling.
I was running the iid tool, but a bit longer than I normally do.
Taking the car after for a run, she smoked on acceleration.
No problems since. Must be a diesel thing. Thumbs Up

Nearly the same prob..

If I start my car after about 5 mins I smell a burning smell and white smoke escapes from under the car. The has happened intermittently, three times is three days.... not at all yesterday . Any ideas please? 'Knowledge Is Power'

If the temperature has been 8 deg or below, it will be the fuel burner heater starting up.
The exhaust for it is underneath, near side more or less in line with the front door.
The actual unit sits right below the battery. Thumbs Up

I doubt it in this instance as this was a midmorning start-up. But thank you for the info. The burning smell was quite noxious really. My wife said 'are we burning petrol' ? 'Knowledge Is Power'

If the ambient air temperature is around 8 deg or below, and the water temp is below 65 deg or there abouts, then the fbh will kick in.
This happens on mine, especially if you are doing short journey's.
Listen for a clicking coming from rear of car.
Very common on the td6.
Greg.

White smoke is unburnt fuel. Could be a faulty injector. Have you fitted the modified cc breather or at least changed the old filter element, if not I would do that first. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Totally agree that after a long idle it will smoke a bit when moving off, but not much and only really noticeable at night. I always try to mix driving styles to make sure the system gets a bit of a clear out every few days. Tom

Its a faulty injector/s, or blocked crank breather. Both fairly common on higher mileage cars Thumbs Up

I had exactly the same problem on a freelander, always believed it to be an injector but never actually investigated further.

Thanks everyone for the input.

It is quite a high mileage td6 so expecting a little smoke but not as much as I'm getting.
This morning I got lost of power and would not rev over 3k found split in upper turbo hose so order one. Hopping this will fix the power issue. And I'll investigating the smoke on next service for now I'll just not sit with car turning over when the wife's in asda

split hoses can cause all sorts of issues on derv engines so don't be surprised if you've inadvertently fixed your smoke issue aswell pal lol
