Speed restriction adjustment

Bit of a 'what if?' topic really.

I have a supercharged 4.2. Love it to bits and dont want to get rid of it ... but would like to be able to fit chunkier tyres to it.

Trouble is that its speed limited to 130mph ... which is above the speed rating of a lot of chunky tyres which seem to be down nearer to 112mph ranges. Insurance may have issues with that should the worst happen.

Is it possible to get the restriction lowered ? To me, 130mph is pointless, I dont need it. I would never triple figure it when driving ...*cough* .... Rolling with laughter

Would insurers even buy into that ? How would you prove its limited ? V8 or else ...

United Kingdom

makes sense what you are saying but the tyres must be rated to the top speed of the vehicle whether you do that speed or not..also the tyre will have to be able to cope with the acceleration of the vehicle.. ... - .- -.

You and your insurers might take comfort from LR homologation of the tyres you want to fit. The homologated all terrain tyres currently available for the 322 are Goodyear Duratrac 255/55R19. There are also 255/55R20 which will fit to the 405 20" wheels, though I am not aware of LR having homologated these. I contacted Goodyear UK to ask about suitability for the 405, specifically the 5.0SC and was told they would be OK, though obviously one would need to stay below the speed limit for the tyre. I was told that they were to be homologated following the introduction of the Discovery 5, which also uses that size in certain variants, but I don't know if that has happened. I see that the D5 SVX uses the Duratrac 275/55R20 and that car is rated for a top speed of 100mph, but 0 - 60 is under 6 secs, so one surmises that the tyres can take the acceleration, but not high speeds.

I have the 255/55R19 Duratracs as my winter tyres. I told the insurers about them and they had no problems with them. I'm happy with the tyres for general driving, including farm tracks, fields, snow etc. Braking distances are a bit longer, especially in the wet, and they will not be as good as a full winter tyre on ice, but better than standard summer tyres anyway and of course much better off road. I don't do Autobahn driving, so the need to stay under 100 mph is not a problem to me. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Funny you mention the D5 SVX ... it was the tyres on that along with the petrol V8 that prompted the question.

Might give the insurance a phone. V8 or else ...
