Another slow puncture

I've 275/40/20 general grabber AT's on my 07 FF I keep getting slow punctures where mud is getting between the alloy and the tyre, I'm not 'serious' off roading just muddy tracks and fields etc
Anybody know of a fix to stop this happening? I'm running pressures at 36 and the alloys are in fairly good condition, I used the green slime stuff in a spare wheel once but have been told it ruins the tyre for future repairs??

I used to get this on my old Jeep - there was one particular course that seemed to have very gritty mud - I hate to think what other damaging effects it was having....

I was chatting to the lads at ATS and they produced a tub of something - it was kind of brown in colour and they used it like the white grease stuff they wipe around the rim before fitting the tyre.

Seemed to do the trick for me - I think it was tackier and think they used it on trucks, but not entirely sure......

Maybe have a chat to an experienced local tyre fitter.

When I had a slow puncture on mine it was due to some corrosion inside the wheel rim where the tyre bead contacts the rim. The tyre fitter cleaned it up with a flap-wheel and it's been good ever since. 2006MY 4.2 SC

I'm surprised you are getting mud between rim and tyre. The only time that has happened to me was in my first Classic when I skidded on ice and hit the back wheel against an earth bank which pushed the tyre off the bead and left earth between them. You'd know if that were happening and the puncture would not be that slow...

I did however have a phase of constant slow punctures when running Goodyear MT/Rs on my 2004 car. This was due to corroded beads on the wheels and solved as for earlier posters on this thread by the tyre fitters removing the corrosion and applying a bead sealant before refitting the tyres. That was done every time those tyres went on for the winter and the problem was almost entirely solved. The harder versions of all terrain tyre seem worse at sealing than softer tyres, but the problem seems much more likely to be the wheels Only Range Rovers since 1988

Sounds like it could have been bead sealer Alex

Thanks for all the info and links such a wealth of experience on here!
I've not long had the tyres fitted and was under the impression that the wheels/beads were good.
It seems to have cured itself this time, maybe I'll go back to the fitters and have them all re sealed on a refurbished set of wheels I've seen.....
Good point about other damage the mud / grit can cause one to bear in mind!
The only other thing I thought was the pressure sticker by the door doesn't list my tyre size maybe a larger tyre wall say 55 instead of 40 would help?!?

Wheels are on their way!
Think I'm going to go for a larger side wall to, there's plenty to choose from, anyone know if I need to adjust the speedo or anything else if I go for a sidewall over the 50 on the tyre pressure chart??

Even with good beads, the forces when you're in ruts can be enough to let some grit get forced in there - so the extra bead seal will help.

Taller tyres - or more specifically a larger circumference will affect gearing and speedo - but whether it's enough to care bout is up to you - there are plenty of online converters that will tell you the percentage difference.

Depending on quite how big you go, you may need to think about clearance around the wheel arches and body - there are a few threads already and I can't remember the biggest size without rubbing

Cheers Alistair, just had another search and looks like 285/55/20 fills up the arch I was thinking 255/55/20 as a replacement which should fit comfortably
One more question! Are there any tyre shops that offer discounts to forum members?
